.. seems the problem here is the use of qualitative term 'best' or 'good' friend. Different people are taking these terms at different level. How best is the 'best' ? It is rather a vague term - and is the reason why you not agreeing with me.
I got this feeling cuz you are considering a relation with 'gf's friend' or friend's friend as a 'close' one which, for me, is not 'close' in my scale. Let's first make this demarkation clear so that we all measure this word 'best' at the same scale.
Again, let me repeat - 'a best friend is one with which you share your personal problems, feelings and trust, and if you are at this level with a girl, this means you are already into the domain of sex.'
Corollary to the above theorem: "A relationship between a boy and a girl outside a domain of sex can never be a 'close' one."

hahaha..BM, okay i must have been unclear in my last post. i was, in specific, not agreeing with the part where you say:

again, just like 'best friend', 'just a friend' can have several connotations but your statement doesn't hold much meat when you realize that you are friends (just friends..not close) with so many of them (girls). and there are some of them (at least in my case), with whom you cannot even think to imagine doing anything naughty hahaha..and this is not because they are any less attractive(physical or otherwise) than some of the other so-called 'chawnker' ones, but it's just that the feeling (the chemistry) is not there. however, that does not discount the fact that they still are good friends of yours.
(if they see me write this, they will come to haunt me in my dreams for sure hahaha)
and i don't know the definition of 'best friends' but i tend to agree with yours however you seem to have pretty clear stance on the sex part with best friends but i believe that sometimes, it might not be the case and while sex may be present there in some form, somewhere and someday (meaning... in thoughts if not in actions, once a month if not everyday and in timbucktoo if not in texas ), i don't think two best friends (a girl and a boy) must be having a hardcore 
sexual relation (if that is what being in domain of sex means).

I agree. They should not necessarily be involved in hard sex. Even if any thought or imagination of sex comes into your mind, I am also considering it 'sex' in above defintion. Cuz no matter if this feeling manifests into real action or not, it is sex.
And if you are too close with some girl and there never come such feelings in you, then you should immediately visit a doctor. It is not normal !

I came to usa along with my best friend ( a girl). We were kinda late. So, we didnt find any other roomies. So we decided to fit in a single room. There was only one bed. I slept on the floor and she on it. Gradually, i got promoted to bed. Not too long, we started kissing and after a week had sex. She had her bf back home. And i just had a break up. She was like a real innocent girl.
So, slowly we started falling in love. The next semester her bf came to usa and above all the same college. Those were really awkward days.
So i dun think a girl and a guy can become best friends.
They can be a good friend not a best friend.

About time I thought should write something meaningful.
In anyone's life, relationships are important. You've got a family, a girl friend/ boy friend or a wife/husband. But I believe that apart from all that if you really have even one person in your life who you can call a friend, you can count on any given day, any given situation, any given time...no matter what...you got something son.
Now, the gender of that person is irrelevant. Doesn't really matter it's a boy, girl, or no. 6.
But if you look from sexual angle, it's about time one needs to stop talking friendship, coz its not friendship then. Period.
If it's a genuine friendship, its not a challenge to your manhood but it's the case of chemistry, which wont be there that you might have with any other girl/boy. In genuine friendships,you don't go to bed. If u go to bed, its not friendship.
So, a boy and girl can be best friends. Just as a boy and boy can be (what about gays then ?), and just as a girl and another girl can be (what about lesbians???).
So you get to look one way,if its friendship, if u really look for that, gender is not something that matters as long as its the best friend of my life who I trust more than the most, who cares about me more than the most, and who will be there for me at any given day.
As far as sex goes, its out of question unless I am with another girl where there is that chemistry, that electricity going which can never be present when I hang out with my bff.

They can not be best friend cause networking signal.
A relationship between a girl and a guy can be labelled as "best frens" when they have a mutual relationship, respecting each others space and privacy, prepared to seek each other's wisdom without any inhibitions, realise that though they have their individual lives, they are always there for the other.
The "best fren" label will be given when these two, out of the above factors find themselves making love (not just sex) as a ordinary course of events leads them to bed to express their genuine feelings of care and concern. No obligations after that. Love is mutually shared and that's their secret, like all other secrets they share.
Life then continues as usual, both giving the other the due respect and friendship. That's called "best frens".
YES THEY CAN BE BUT IF YOU THINK YOU WANT TO TRY DON'T EVER TRY IT THAT WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE IN LONG TERM ONLY EXCEPT YOU WANT TO MARRY HER IN FUTURE. I HAVE SEEN ONE COUPLE WHO TRIED TO PROVE THEMSELF AS BEST FRIENDS EVER SINCE THEIR COLLEGE LIFE. WE ASKED HIM TO BE IN DISTANT WITH THAT GIRL AND HE SAID NO ITS JUST A FRIEND SHIP AND WE NEVER GONNA DO ANYTHING WRONG AND HE SAID HE GONNA PROVE WHAT THE REAL FRIENDSHIP IS OTHER THAN MARRIAGE. HAHAH..... AFTER FEW YEARS THEY SCREWED UP EACH OTHER. WHEN THEY STARTED COMBINED STUDY DURING FINAL TEST ....... GONE WILD AND NOW THE GUY IS LIVIGN WITH HIS WIFE AND " RAKHAUTE( SO CALLED TRUE FRIEND)" NOW HIS WIFE LIVES WITH FAMILY IN HOME AND HIS " RAKHAUTE " WIFE SO CALLED TRUE FRIEND IN RENTED HOUSE.
AND NO WONDER NOW THEY HAVE BABY ALSO.... SO .... WHAT GREATER EXAMPLE I CAN GIVE YOU MORE THAT THIS FOR FRIENDSHIP OF BOY AND GIRL.
