Can anybody here enlighten me on what documents are required from me if I need to be a sponsor for a DV lottery winner?  Does the sponsor need to be a citizen or green card holder?

Much appreciated.

Hi Riten,

I recently went through the same process. These days you just send a welcome letter, you dont need to sponsor DV winners. But for backup I did sent one sponsor letter in case if they asked for while interviewing.

You dont need a green card or citizenship, just send them your bank statement, for about pase 6 mth, show the reasonable balance depending on the no of people you are trying to welcome. And a letter from you employer saying you are theirs employee. Your other legal documents like H1 or so so.

In welcome letter, just say that you'll be helping them by providing any types of support once they are here by all the means you can and you have the means to do that.

Its better for the DV winners to contact to some agency in nepal who do this kind of processing. They are perfect in doing these stuffs, so that your relatives just know what they need.

By the way how many ppl are coming ?

Good luck !

Thanks Sampada.

It's just one couple - husband and wife.  We are helping them start a new life here.  I hope things will work out great.

Riten Bro

Ask a lawer first because we had to a send a document called  Affidavit of support or sponser ..somethin like that...On top of our tax returns and bank statements and a welcome letter, It does require that you will be the person responsible for their every actions in AMerica in case of emergencies or any thing regarding law with them. Fortunately the person we helped is a freind and got the Visa and will stay with us untill she gets to know things around and we will help her.

                                                         Good luck

AAAA....it depends on their mood. So i would say its wise to take it with you if you have a sponsor. Its better to be safe than to be sorry

Sponsor  must be US citizen or Green card holder.

Documents:

Affidavit of support Form I-134

Attach Recent Bank statement or letter from a bank, Tax return for last 3 years , Sponsor's Job letter from employer with I-134. You can download Form I-134 instructions for more information.

Himayala, it is not required these days.  it used to be required document.  my cousin brother recently came to USA without sponsership letter.  however, we had sent him a letter saying we will pick him up at the airport once he arrives here.  also, i know at least 2 other people came after him who did nt have sponser letter.

I have met few folks at the embassy door. Trying to get their documents back from the embassy. Reason for the visa denial was "sponsor nai milena re..paisa nai pugena bhanyo". I also have met a guy whose document was NOT complete (didn't have his doctor's report) the day his DV expires i.e spet 30th and still got a visa. So my advise is if you can have the sponsor letter take it with you. Don't let those embassy folks turn you down. If they don't require thats fine if they do then you are screwed.

As far as I think, sponsoring is just not required. If you are coming to the US, you can survive by working in McDonalds. Unless you have less than 5 thousand dollars per person in the Nepalese bank account, sponsorship is not required. However, due to monetary regulations, you can only bring certain amount of money here. So, for that purpose, having a welcome letter will help because that way, you are not initially in a burden to pay rent.
