This information might be outdated but during my last trip to Nepal, I saw a sign at the airport that anything above $2000 should be declared at customs.  So, I guess you can take as much money as you want, but if you are to do the official way, you might have to pay customs/taxes/bribes etc.  You know how it is at the Kathmandu Airport, people over there are like parasites, waiting with their mouths wide open.

Rascal,
Riten is right. Legally, under the custom law you cannot carry more then $2000 cash or check. However, its up to you if you want to carry more then this on your own responsibility. I dont know the reference about Mr NPSMARTIES. How and under what circumstances he did it.....its a matter of discussion. Under US federal law it is persons obligation to clarify the source before he plans to carry more then $20,000 out of united states.

People have different views on this topic but talk think old veterans who have been living here for pretty long time and are frequent Nepal goers might provide you with good information if you are planning to carry a lot of cash.

Brother, If you want to take more than $2000 , you need to declare it at the custom.Call or email the Nepalese Embassy here for more info. Chao.

forget all that...just wire transfer to a bank account you have in Nepal. it costs, but is the safest and fastest way.

I am gonna try all of the above. But my preferences are for last two suggestions - contact Nepalese Embassy for more info & wire transfer to bank account in Nepal.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

its fine to take it with you.. my dad did the same thing. buy one small bag (u know how u put that in waist area). as long as you have ur money on your body..its fine. no body is going to touch your body unless u have any metal inside your body, then they would make u take off ur clothes.
