I got my OPT recently. I also found a job but one that starts one week before the begin date on OPT. I requested my employer if I could join the work one week late, but she said that I can't because then I will miss the training period. She suggested that I might have to join the company sometime after three months, when they will have another training session. I don't want to have that gap in between. Is there anything I can do to avoid that gap?

Gains, why all the fuss about OPT and CPT? Arent you going back to Nepal too? Youre supposed to, as you have explained when getting the VISA. I dont see any reason why you should remain in the US not your origin country Nepal, where i am right now. Gians, I know our own country is so bad that most Nepalese are desperately leaving to migrate to other countries like the USA, cANADA, Australia, the Middle East and everywhere else where they can find employment and live permanently. Despite our backbreaking labor in the country, people can hardly make both ends meet. Parents think of leaving so they can earn more in other countries, and have their earnings reserved for the education of their children. They prefer to be away and earn much more, rather than earn the pittance wages here, and not be able to save for the future. I too love Nepal but we are wrong we did get help along the way from many different countries. The Shaha empire was great too but it did fall. If we do not stop the invasion of corrupted politicians then our empire will fall. If we do not quit trying to be PC and never offend some people then our empire will fall. The politicians must be held accountable for everything from allowing the degradation of morals to the waste of taxes. And IF we all young highly educated Nepalese dont go to Nepal after our completion of studies, and dont want to find the oppertunities to build it then we as a country are doomed. Always remember getting education from foreign universities bring respect when working in your own country. BTW rnmn, I am also a US Graduate from GeorgeTown Univiersity in DC alumni of 1998. I never thought of applying any h1's and GC, though i have a Nepali American born wife Sunita. I pursuade my wife give up the US citizen, and adopt Nepalese. Thanks for listening. Lest develop Nepal, make it heard and seen with development. DAKY

Mr. DAKY, Are you really in Nepal .... I doubt that. Here is a line from your post: "Arent you going back to Nepal too?" If you were in Nepal that line should have been: "Arent you coming back to Nepal too?" Its just natural way of speaking.

Sorry Prakash Ji, I came to US when i was 3 years old. I lived here for 32 Years, and finally moved to Nepal cause there is where I am supposed to be. Sometimes my writings indicate that I am still in US, cause its a long time I was there, but i apologize for the grammatical mistake. Anyways, I will surely meet Gains, or whoever like to meet me. Email me, when you are here in KTM, and will sure invite you to my house for dinner. Sunita makes great Italian dish. Sunita is my wife. I would love to offer you with a great opportunity to establish yourself, for your not returning considerations. You don’t need to be in US, while you can do so much thing in NEPAL. DAKY

Hello there, I don't see a problem at all. Why don;t you just take the job and go on a training. Training is learning and education and you don't need visa for it. As long as the company doesn't pay you for the week you are in training, I don't think you have a problem at all. Either you can have your company adjust the pay for the training week, when you get your OPT or just not worry about getting paid for the training week. For example, if you take online class sitting at your home....how does that relate to your visa and OPT. All the best......dont give up. Luvs and prayers Your helping hand

Hey Helping hand and others, Thanks for your help. I am sharing what I did just so that some others could get some insights should they ever come under such circumstances. I told my employer that I will start my work their normal time but without being in the payroll for the first week; and, that they should give me a "bonus" pay check or a week break with pay sometime later. Fortunately, it worked out for me. I appreciate your help.

I am glad it worked out well for you gains. It does nt work allthe time. it works well if the company is run by south asians or if it is a small company. However,if the company is big, there is very little chance of such things. i am also in similar situation, and it did nto work out for me. they rather asked me to come back in october because they said they dont want to take any chance.

It is best to graduate on August and start your OPT two months later on October so that when it expires, you are all set for H1B. Little forethought goes a long way and removes future headache.
