What are you reading now!
I am reading The Gurkhas by John Parker. Still in first few pages......quite interesting
sajha thread by you all :-)
Cold mountain by Charles Frazier and Stephen king's 'Salem's Lot..this one is doing an awesome job of scaring me. As well, Wind in the Willows, just to refresh my memory of it all..used to love the cartoon version as a kid .
Half a life (VS Naipaul) - one of Naipaul's better pieces of fiction. Based mostly in India, Europe and Africa.
The Kite Runner (Khaled Hosseini) - this one's been a slow read but I hope to get done by the fall.
Avani, Freaconomics is next on my list :)
Captain H, I've loved the first few pages that i've read, hopefully, it'll keep me enlightened and captivated through-out...let me know you like it :)
Hey Avani ,
OK. I actually bought that book on tape, well CD, and that's something I have never done before, but was bold enough to do this time, thanks to the about-to-expire gift certificate from several birthdays ago :) .... he he. I have heard a lot of good things about the book and am looking forward to it.
Happy reading!
The Millionaire in You...Ten Things You Need to Do Now to Have Money and THE TIME TO ENJOY IT....BY MICHAEL LeBoeur, Ph.D.
Full of information for future.....budget....:)
. I read "Shantaram" by Gregory David Roberts. Brilliant book and good writer. Read this when you have plenty of time in hand. Has almost 1000 pages.
Next, "Absurdistan" by Gary Shteingart is a funny and satirical novel. Read it if you have a good sense of humor. Shteingart may be the best writer of our generation.
Finally, I cannot remember the name of the writer but the book is titled "The Plot to Save Socrates". It is a fiction playing on the idea of time travel, and how somebody tries to travel in time and save Socrates by preventing him from drinking the hemlock poison. Very interesting read. You do not have to be a science-fiction and time-travel nut to enjoy this novel.
I'm reading ya'alls posts! :)
People are talking about books/articles here. Wish I had time to munch some literary work. At times I feel like a machine working with all those numbers and waiting for the accurate results.
I started on "Meditations on First Philosophy", but somehow involvement with robotic classes seemed more important. Hece, it's on pending.
On Beauty by Zadie Smith. I was blown away by her 1st book - White Teeth. Frankly I liked White Teeth far better than this. Still a good read. She is a good writer.
just started reading Imperial womam - by Pearl S Buck .
So called tough country, how polygamy still survives in US and what is FLDS? Curious? read "Under the banner of heaven" by Jon Krakaur. I like " Bellow another sky: a mountain adventure in search of a lost father" by Rick Ridgeway. How about " In to the wild" by Jon Krakaur too?
Me? Reading Sunday Times... :-)
Himalaya,
How's the reading coming along - wotsit, Gurkhas!
Have not read the book - my office library holds a copy.
I think I read 'The Gurkhas' around twelve years ago. :) Though I have forgotten lots of things, I still remember the bravery shown by the Gurkhas in Mandalay, Burma, in WW II.
Currently, I am in the middle of reading 'A briefer history of time', but it hasn't gained momentum for a few months. :)
Inside the third reich by Alber Speer ( English translation from German)
"The Gurkhas" is really fantastic....Haven't finished it yet (I usually lack motivation when it comes to complete a book).
first few chapters are like reviewing my history lesson from elementary or junior high textbook (in english this time!) and lots of other things which i never knew before. (All the way back from prithivi narayan shah to current recruitment of Gurkha soldiers)
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND it....please read it if you have time
