I am having a problem with my 18 month old dell inspiron 5160 . The warranty already expired. Every time I boot, it displays a message- AC power is not detected and asks to press F1. The AC adptor is just fine. I noticed that the port (DC) is loose. I went throuhg the technical forum on Dell webpage. Its a very common problem in this model. Every body suggested me to change the main board- that costs me about $400$-500. I was wondering if someone gone through this situation has some idea to share on it. Thanks in advance

a small piece of advice for non-spammers .... spammer terrorists are not allowed to read this! Dell is a fantastic laptop and PC maker...but it has power problems with it's battery and other aspects...you should always get extended warranty...and after 3 years (when a PC is outdated) buy a new one... I don't know of anyone who came across the above problem or even has a above model...but my piece of advice is: Buy only DELL and buy with an extended warranty! pS.: ifany of you spammers read the following then pleasekill yourself because the above was from your death.

MMMN, Thanks for your advice. But contrary to your advice, I have gone throguh lots of problems with dell. First one of the letter keys puffed off and then I need to replace the hard drive. I have very unpleasent experience with DELL. So I am now kind of decided not to buy DELL in my life and recommend others not to buy Dell too. This is terrible. Hope I wont lost my data. Cheers

The best laptops: 1]IMB THINK PAD- STYLE,PERFORMANCE,- BUT EXPENSIVE 2]TOSHIBA- GOOD STYLE,GOOD RELIABILITY,REALTIVELY EXPENSIVE 3]DELL- BEST VALUE FOR THE MONEY,NOW IN GOOD STYLE 4]HP-COMPAQ- LITTLE BIT EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT IT IS ACTUALLY 5]SONY- WORST LAPTOP-BEST DESIGN-SLEEK THAT IS WHY SO BAD- BAD COOLING SYSTEM.HIGHLY EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN AND COST 2 years warranty is suffcient enough as the technology change so fast and the laptops are cheap ..you might change your mind to buy new one after 2 years.

Does anybody know how this guy can fix or get around the problem he's having? Obviously he's out of warranty and its too late for extension. Can we just focus on the original topic for a change???gosh!!!

RHC, You should be glad this didn't happen to you...... Dell laptop explodes at Japanese conference Wednesday 21 June 2006, 13:22 AN INQUIRER READER attending a conference in Japan was sat just feet away from a laptop computer that suddenly exploded into flames, in what could have been a deadly accident. Gaston, our astonished reader reports: "The damn thing was on fire and produced several explosions for more than five minutes". Should you witness such an event, his advice is, "Don't try anything courageous/stupid, stay away, away, away!" "For the record, this is a Dell machine," notes Gaston. "It is only a matter of time until such an incident breaks out on a plane," he suggests. Our witness managed to catch all the action in these amazing pictures. "Fire extinguishers leave a mess on your suit and belongings; pack your stuff (if you can) and leave, leave, leave!" he advises. We don't have any further details of the model of the computer in question. In light of the evidence, however, we'd suggest you avoid actually using a laptop on your lap. Ouch.
