Chhaina...specificallly NEPALI restaurant Ny ma chhaina. But if you go to Durbae East Indian Restaurant at 1st Avenue between East 14th and 15th Streets, which is owned by a wonderful Nepali, you can tatse few Nepali dishes. MO MO with timmur ko chatni is always available, and they occasionally have alu ko achar, alu-tama-bodi, etc. If you order in advance by phone, you can sometimes have nice chhoila too.
How Bizarre!!

It's not exactly a nepali restaurant but if you wanna try some great food, you should go to Tangra Masala. The food is superb. I like it a lot. It's kinda Nepali, kinda indian and kinda chinese all mixed in one.

Latest developments!!! The Yak Restaurant (mentioned above by AX), which mostly catered Tibetan food so far, has now been bought and operated by two of very good Nepali friends. The new menu features about 20 exclusively authentic Newari/Nepali dishes. Name of the restaurant has also been changed to "Himalayan Yak". Some of the highlights: Chhoila, Sekuwa, Sukuti Khasi ko gidhi ra jibro ko bhuttan Gundruk Saandheko WO (bada) etc. I was there yesterday -- their very first day of serving Nepali food -- and was disappointed to find only a very few items from the Nepali menu were available yesterday, due to on going set up problems, they said. But i did get to try chhoila, chicken chili and aalu dum. They were EXCELLENT!!!!!!! Then I had Nepali Khana Special for entree: Khande thaali ma...bhat, chana ko tarkari, mushroom ko tarkari, deep fried ramtoriyaan (lady fingers) and tite karela ko tarkari...with dal and chiken curry on the side served on bowls. Amazing is all I have to say! Mughling mai basera khako jasto...ajha, much better! Everyone, specially those who live in the NY-metro area MUST try it! Location: 72nd street and Roosevelt Avenue, Jackson Heights.

i'm excited to know that the yeti restaurant has gone nepali! good news indeed! i never understood why there are no nepali restaurants in nyc or boston, but there are like 3 in madison, wisconsin and other smaller cities around the states!?! there's also a place in the west village (varick and broome i think) called the monkey temple. it's not really a nep restaurant, but is more like a lounge/bar with some e-snacks and such. it is owned by a nepali man and his seti wife. oh, ani palpali gaule ko laagi, poonte baaje ko ghar pani nepali restaurant hune ho ni!

Tam tayaar! ;) Anyway, yes, Monkey Temple's owner is a good friend of mine...next time jaanda...tell him (if he is there), ET sent you, and ask for a free SAKITINI. If he refuses the "free" part, well, he is a business man! lol there's another much bigger, much cooler bar in midtown that is owned by a Nepali, Palpali...if you get a chance, go visit SNAFU bar at E. 47th betwn Lexington and 3rd Avenues. North side of 47th, closer to LEX. milyo bhane...go on a saturday...they have seusy female bartenders doing seusi dances on top of the bar! They dont strip fully, though. But, hey! After a few drinks, you can have your wildest imagination entertain you! You've gotta be lucky, though...I was told they dont have those always. Anyway, the ambience is cool...with a realxing lounge with dim lightts and sofas at the rear end of the bar...and a pool table downstairs.

o-hooo, poonte dai, tapai pani palpali nai ho ki? i actually have been to the monkey temple twice, but it was closed both times. but i'll be in nyc again this weekend....maybe i'll try again. i have never met the owner (rajeev, hoina?), but i know of him (a relative of a friend). never heard of snafu bar either. sounds like it should be in bangkok or something! i wouldn't be terribly surprised if we've met at some nepali events in nyc before....
