I was answering in general. Domestic flight does not require passport and simple driver license is fine for now. I believe sometime in 2025 REAL Id is required

But keeping passport valid at least for 6 months is a requirement for international travel. Airlines and POEs may let you pass even with soon to expire passport but you will be at their mercy

Would you be able to contact or email the Nepali embassy? It shouldn't be that complicated. When I got my new passport around 6-7 years ago, I got a temporary passport while my old passport took 2 months to arrive

Nepal is a poor and corrupt country. The whole World knows about it. The Nepal Embassy has already proved it.
You are in big trouble. If your Nepali Passport is expired, US immigration will require you to show a valid passport and if you can't fly to DC because you re out of status here, then you will not get your new Nepali Passport. Nepal Embassy will not help you UNLESS IF you know someone in Nepal Embassy. " Aafno Manchhe"

It s called ' you got punched in your head and butt at the same time'.
You re screwed.

I agree, you just need a valid state ID to travel within US.

Normally, it is advised that you renew within 6 months of expiry date. However, if it has already expired, it is not the end of the world. You can still renew it.

Thanks.

You don’t need to have a legal status to travel. You need a state issued ID or driving license as others have mentioned before. Regarding renewal of passport it does not matter if it’s expired or has few months remaining, you can renew it.
I personally went to NYC consulate and did the renewal process(in 2018) it took under 1 hour.
You will have to leave a prepaid envelope. Once the passport is ready the consulate will mail you your new passport using that prepaid envelope.
You can also have the passport expedited its going to cost a little more money & few extra steps but if its not urgent you should get you new passport in about 1 month.
Again that was my personal experience from 2018 things might be different now post covid.

A passport doesn't provide you a legal status anyway, so whether it's expired or valid, it doesn't matter while living in the US. Anyway, if you don't have a valid photo ID like State ID or DL for domestic flights, TSA will want to see your passport.

In terms of just renewing, you can renew/apply for new passport at any time even years after the current passport expiry.

Is Nepal Embassy opening a Consular Service in the West Coast of the US ?
Thousands of Nepalese need to renew their passports in the West Coast.
Why isn't Nepal Embassy doing anything ?
