God is not possible to understand by humans since there is nothing comparable. There is nothing but God, or divine consciousness in the creation. To make people relate to that invisible force, astral energy, the shastras and sacred texts told stories but they have to be understood not as literal meaning but symbolic with deeper lessons and guidance to humanity, however, certain people has used these texts to serve their own narrow interest and tried to monopolize the knowledge therein. The West mostly live at the gross level, and does not bother too much about the subtle forces. Recently they have started to see the connection, but if you ever go through the Upanishads, the whole focus is on the subtle force and universal consciousness. It is not hard to conclude that the East was far far ahead of the West in its explanation and understanding about the creation.

it is just a superficial level of understanding. The visible world is called the gross world. It is the least energetic of them all. There is the subtle world and also the causal world. What people call God in any form is just a means to help people understand, like an illustrated story. Since people have form and they see forms everywhere, they can understand and relate only in terms of firms so they created images of God according to their understanding and to explain to others. That was not always true though. Before they developed images of God and idols, they used to see God as light or other physical objects in nature. The reality is far far far deeper.
