Samuel Darjee was 19 when court documents say he began a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl – a crime that led to felony charges.

Both are refugees from Nepal. They met, according to Darjee's attorney, at one of the dozen or so Nepalese-speaking Christian churches in the Cincinnati area.

When Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Wende Cross sentenced Darjee on Wednesday to six months in prison because of that relationship, the girl sat on a bench in the back of the courtroom and cried uncontrollably. For several minutes, she refused to stand up and walk out.

Earlier, during the hearing, the girl said she wanted the charges to be dropped. Cross asked why.

"Because I love him," said the girl, who is now 16. "It's not only his fault. It's my fault. I should also get punished."

But it was revealed at Wednesday's hearing that Darjee, a Forest Park resident, had continued to meet the girl after his arrest in December 2019 on charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Darjee had been ordered not to have contact with her.

Through an interpreter, the girl's mother told Cross: "My daughter went, in middle of the night, and they met each other."

The girl's mother said she had disapproved of the relationship from the start, and tried to explain to both Darjee and her daughter that she was too young.

"They never listened to us," the girl's mother said.

"Her life is just beginning," she added. "He made my daughter's future really bad."

The Forest Park police detective who headed the investigation, Joseph Haugh, said the girl "went through an emotional rollercoaster" and that the laws exist to protect minors.

"A 14-year-old doesn't have the mental capacity to have sex with an adult," Haugh told Cross.

Darjee's attorney, Michael Trapp, said in court that the relationship also would have been unlawful and "frowned upon" in Nepal, "but not to the degree it is in the U.S."

"He explained to me that if it had happened in Nepal, there would have been pressure on them to get married," Trapp said.

Darjee, now 21, was born in a refugee camp in Nepal. His family is from Bhutan but fled that country to escape religious persecution. Darjee was 14 when he came to the U.S. and is now a permanent resident.

As part of the plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge and prosecutors dismissed the unlawful sexual conduct with a minor charges. That could help him in any future immigration proceedings.

After Cross imposed the sentence, Darjee was instructed to sit in a chair in the jury box. Wearing a suit and tie, he sat alone and waited for deputies to take him out of the courtroom. He covered his face with his hands.

Samuel Darjee, a refugee from Nepal, pleaded guilty and was sentenced Wednesday, July 21, 2021 to six months in prison, for having sex with a 14-year-old girl when he was 18. The case was in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court before Judge Wende Cross.
