We don't even see that kind of weddings in Nepal why would people in US do that? That's a bit odd.

It's not just wedding. I am so tired of seeing "wanna be Desi" mentality. Nothing against Indians and the culture but Nepalese in US are trying to be synonymous of " Desi people". Nepalese flock the movie theaters when there is a new Hindi movie. I grew up watching Hindi movies and still do sometime but I don't just go to watch them every single time. Anyway, we cannot criticize others for their choice but I cannot differentiate lot of Nepalese from Indians beside the fact they speak Nepali.

"I grew up watching Hindi movies and still do sometime but I don't just go to watch them every single time. "

How do you know these people you are criticizing go watch it every single time? You might say some of them are friends. Now, why would you generalize entire Nepali population on things your friend does.

Look, I also don't like the fact that we are so much influenced by the Hindi culture that we are almost assimilating to theirs. But unless I completely denounce it and stop doing everything that is exclusively Hindi, I won't go complaining and certainly won't generalize others. Let them enjoy with whatever they are doing - your criticizing is only going to make you sad, they aren't going to change.

I am not criticizing people for their choices. If they want to fully embrace Desi culture, it's up to them. I just mentioned my dissatisfaction about how every Nepali gatherings, functions and festivals have been indianzied to the extent that it's almost hard to differentiate from an Indian one. We can watch movies and embrace bit and pieces of the culture but to give up everything is just not a good idea. When I went to a Nepali wedding, there was nothing Nepali about it except the people. The bride and groom were both dressed up in traditional way and the whole thing was just plain Indian style. We are heavily influenced by India and if we don't follow the little traditions and costumes we used to, there will be no traces of Nepali culture down the road. It's sad but Indians of Nepali origin do more traditional Nepalese things than most of us.

I feel ya.
Went to a wedding in Kathmandu a month ago, all I saw was Sangeet, bachelor's party etc etc. When did these start back home? I didn't mind too much as rest of the wedding still followed our tradition. One silver lining was the prevalence of Nepali poshak (daura-surwal/kot and dhaka topi) in big functions. It used to be that only ministers or Royals would wear them. Now most "good" families in Kathmandu wear them in big functions proudly.

Very true indeed. Not just mentality, but much Nepalese community in TX, VA, CA, MA, NJ, LA are camouflaging themselves as Indians. They are settling in Indian community residential places with Indian temples, Indian grocery market nearby, a similar physical appearance of Brahmins, Chettris and Newars helps though. Camouflaging one's identity in an attempt to seek more benefit and get jobs from Indian owners is common all over the US.
