He/she should have option of coming back, if things really didn't work out. I have seen lot of got adjusted and also a lot who came back again after trying for around year. So it might work or it might not, but hey it's worth trying, if you get fascinated by love for your country or family back there.

Like others I also like to know about personal situation back home, like financial situation, business or job situation, wealth, age & things like that to correlate my self. I am getting very close to make such decision, and like to get some reference from people , who have make that call. I am here for last 10 yrs, and I think I should make some decision in next 2-3 yrs.

Returning back to Nepal for good is not always, by default, a good idea. It depends on the person's personal situation.

I spent four months in Nepal last year. People asked me how much money I made, how much bank balance I have, my neighbors want to have alcohol party just for nothing etc. People talk about you more than solving their own real problems. A high school graduate Sachib from Ward/Village committee has more legal knowledge than you have (no matter you have PHD from USA). It took five days to register a marriage. There is no customer service in any of the licenses, passport, municipal and malpot offices and no numbering system to call people for their service (no first come first service at all). There is no guideline to fill out any application for anything. It all depends on employees attitude. They can accept same day or call you tomorrow or take weeks to accomplish a task. I spent few days in Kathmandu. We have to hang inside bus to travel. People are more than the city can handle. You cannot withdraw your money from your own bank account if your signature doesn't match your original signature. I think Nepal never changed. Success is always measured on accumulation of wealth. A cab driver from New York who earns 4000 dollars a month has more respect than a person who make 2000 doing office work in New York. I am not judging on profession but Nepalese see only success on saving/accumulating wealth.

So OP will keep listening why she returned to Nepal, what happened ? etc instead of welcoming and assimilating in Nepalese society. Sorry to say we as Nepalese even have not started a line to be as first world country. Never happen.

Good and bad things in life depends on situations and how you want to live.. There are ppl who are here for good, and are happy the way things are, while there are ppl who doesnt see any hope and complains all the time....Bachha ko future ko le hos ya, personal choice le, the the choice was always yours, the decision would always be yours. I've been back for a few months and I thought I'd share my thoughts on this.

I've long-established that unless you've got ties/connections and strong roots, there's absolutely no point of returning back; Well, unless you're soul searching or something of that sort.

It's worse for women; Kathmandu/Nepal is a shithole for average women, especially those 'accustomed' to liberty, freedom, expression et al. Forget 'rural areas'. Kathmandu itself is a shit hole for women. That added to the fact that there's shit splattered all over - be it in the form of sewer or uncivilized bums taking a dump all over sidewalks, that makes it even shittier.

Apparently, microbuses have 3-4 designated seats for women these days. But considering the fact that women are more reliant on public transportations, can you imagine the nightmarish situation they go through while trying to get home at 5:30 in the evening? How many people can afford cabs/private vehicles? Try hollering for a cab at 9:30, semi-drunk after meeting up with a few friends for drinks.

Say you're financially better off and can afford a scooter or hell, really well off and can afford your own car. The shit that you get through to get your car serviced and in worst cases, pertaining to accidents, the scenario is both cringeworthy and scary.

I went to pay "tiro" for my ghar (that's been rented out) last month. Since there was a miscommunication on my part with current lessees, I ended up (re)paying the taxes that'd already been paid! This happened in Lalitpur that's been digitalized and is equipped with computers now. How infuriating is that?

Outraged, I stormed inside the office the next day, demanding refund. The clerk was paying solitaire on his computer while there was a line outside.

If that's the sort of shit one has to go through in the valley, what's one supposed to do if he's from some rural area?

I could go on about the way people talk, the way people behave. The way people drive is absolutely insane. Roadrage that one experiences in the US is totally different than what s/he experiences here. Ignorance is everywhere. People don't seem to know simple rules of driving. There's no system of "yielding" or "merging". There's no sense of "right-of-way". I was told that regardless of a bike rider's recklessness, you'd still be held liable if you got involved in an accident. That certainly makes you wonder if a go-pro or some dashcam fitted on your windshield might help your cases at all.

Speaking of bike riders, they're the biggest tools you'd come across. Everybody's in a rush when s/he is on a bike/scooter. Literally. Every fkn person. The only exceptions are the ones carrying infants and kids.  Bike riders are biggest idiots except for people that seemingly give little/no personal space when lining up at a counter/window/door.

Traffic 'officials' are the only ones that seem to do their job. Big ups to every one of them. I'd read about some trafficwoman being diagnosed with TB after serving 18 yrs in the valley and the state of pollution gives you an idea about what must've caused it.

All the rant/jibberish talk aside, home is where the heart is. If you're willing to accept the country for what it is, I'm sure you'll like it.

I hated almost about everything at the beginning but I'm not going to pretend like this is something I didn't expect. I don't love filthy air and atmosphere. I despise the way people shamelessly piss and spit all over. I cringe at the way people don't value personal space. But slowly but surely, I'm getting 'used to it' but I'm not sure if this is what I really seek and aspire.

That said, I'd be shocked if Racheeta didn't have means and resources to lead a good life in Nepal.

There are a lot of people who has returned fro usa aus in Nepal forever. You are not the only one or the few ones. If you go to Nepal with the mentality you have rite now, You will be regretting it. eradicate the feeling of telling and letting people know of how aspiring thought you have going to Nepal. You will feel like you are just a fish in the ocean when you are in Nepal if you go with this thought.

I am not here to comment who is right and who is wrong. By nature we are different and we think differently. The only thing I would like to share is, I lived in US for almost 11 years and returned back to Nepal 11 months ago for good. There are couple personal reasons why I came back leaving back my decent job and life in the US. Trust me when I left US, I was not happy with my decision myself.

Now looking back 11 months, I don't regret returning back to Nepal for good. We cannot expect or compare Nepal with US, because we are top from bottom and US is top from top. Life is not that bad in Nepal (my personal opinion). I agree nothing is systematic, everything seems slow and unorganized, that is why this is Nepal.

Who ever wants to come to Nepal for good, only one suggestion I would like to give is, he/she should have patience (lots of patience). Other things gets adjusted slowly. Most of us spent 17-18 years here (assuming you left Nepal when you were at that age) so we know what to expect.

Ktmlaure, do you happen to know of forums/organizations etc where returnees get to hangout and share ideas and so on?

One thing I really miss is hanging out with friends. Once people get married in Nepal, they seem to change way more drastically that one would imagine. I get to hang out with my friends on weekends. Most married homes are normally rushing to get home after office hours.

I agree on your post about patience. You can't expect things to go as planned and expected. Life is way slow paced and that probably explains why life isn't really that stressful.
