I am trying to buy plane tickets for my father to come from kathmandu to US and back. I have got quotes from numerous consultancies but the same tickets are around $100 cheaper in kayak and cheapoair. Will there be any problem if I buy tickets from these online sources for flights that originate in nepal? Is sending a copy of the e-ticket enough for my father to travel here without any problem? Please advise.

Hi SajhaBaba,

That was the trend I saw as well. The quoted price online are 50-100 dollars less expensive than given my travel agents, who also coerce you to buy on the spot. The reality is their tickets are the same as online with the addition of booking fees. I recently bought a ticket from cheapoair without a problem. Try Skyscanner.net, which probably has the best deals possible. If you're unsure about dates and unforeseen changes, you can also buy insurance for additional $50 or so dollars. Even if you buy from travel agents, its nearly impossible to change the dates without coughing up $200-$300 dollars. Of course, you have to be educated about the transit airports and baggage allowance.

That brings to the point - why are we buying tickets from travel agents in the first place if they cannot match the deal online?

Thanks Snurp! How do I go about buying the insurance? If I decide to postpone the return date by say, 1 month, later on will I be able to do so with the insurance?

What dates and how much are you being quoted?

Buying Cathay tickets from Dragonair website is the cheapest I had. Go to Incognito mode in chrome. Open dragon air website and select Nepal from drop down. If you pay from debit cards you might be charged $40 transaction fee. Or Amex may be another option.  i got quoted 1170 rt

forget all the travel agencies, ticket websites and check this open source ticket matrik, from google, out :)

http://matrix.itasoftware.com/

It does not have agency fee, booking fee, ad fee or whatever other fees that apply.

you can also use it to buy tickets from Nepal in NRS as well as tickets from the US.

Good luck

Since travel agencies are increasing like mushrooms, there must be a good profit margin on this business. Does anyone know how much money travel agents make per ticket? One travel agency told me they only make 10 to 15 dollars per ticket but that number seems a bit low. Any idea?
