Muna Pandey’s Final Night: The Houston Killing That Shook the Nepali Community

Bobby Singh Shah has been charged with capital murder but has not been proven guilty in court. Public sources reviewed do not establish that Shah is Nepalese; several news organizations describe him as Indian-origin.

Muna Pandey came to America carrying the ambitions of an entire family.

Originally from Bhojpur, Nepal, the 21-year-old moved to Houston in 2021 and enrolled at Houston Community College. She was studying nursing and reportedly expected to graduate in December 2024. Muna was her mother Anita Pandey Adhikari’s only child.

Anita had raised her daughter largely by herself. According to an interview with KHOU, she escaped an abusive relationship and relied on community support to help send Muna to America for an education and a better future.

That future ended violently inside Muna’s Houston apartment.

A Camera Captured Her Final Moments

On August 24, 2024, security footage allegedly recorded Muna returning to her apartment carrying shopping bags. A man identified by authorities as 51-year-old Bobby Singh Shah appeared outside her door holding a firearm.

According to the criminal complaint, the recording showed Shah pointing the weapon at Muna and forcing her to enter the apartment. Muna could reportedly be heard asking what he intended to do.

Approximately an hour later, the man was recorded leaving alone while carrying one of Muna’s bags.

For the next two days, Muna stopped answering calls and messages. Friends, coworkers and her mother could not reach her.

On August 26, an unidentified man reportedly called the apartment manager and said that a body was inside Muna’s unit. The caller then disconnected. Police entered the apartment and discovered Muna with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Prosecutors later alleged that she had been shot three times in the torso and once in the back of the head.

The Photograph That Broke the Case

Investigators released an image of the man captured by Muna’s security camera. Members of the public soon contacted police.

A restaurant owner reportedly identified the man as Bobby Singh Shah, a regular customer at a restaurant where Muna had previously worked. Another woman told investigators that she recognized Shah from a dating website connecting older men with younger women. That identification concerned Shah; it did not establish that Muna used the website.

Houston police arrested Shah during a traffic stop on August 28.

Prosecutors alleged that Shah was still wearing bloodstained clothing resembling the clothes recorded by Muna’s camera. They also said officers discovered a firearm inside his vehicle.

The Houston Police Department charged Shah with capital murder in Texas’ 262nd State District Court. Court documents allege that Shah intentionally shot Muna while committing or attempting to commit robbery. He also faced a separate accusation of unlawfully carrying a weapon.

Who Was Bobby Singh Shah?

Shah was 51 when arrested—30 years older than Muna.

A former St. Xavier’s School student, says Shah attended the Jawalakhel school. Former schoolmates also recall Shah traveling to Dubai and speaking about business activities there. These details have not been independently confirmed through school, travel or business records.

The nature of his relationship with Muna has remained disputed. In December 2024, Shah’s defense attorney suggested in court that the two might have had an intimate relationship. That was a defense claim—not a judicial finding or proof of what occurred between them.

What the publicly reported evidence allegedly shows is far more direct: a man with a gun compelling Muna to enter her apartment, followed by that man leaving alone with her property.

A Mother’s Journey No Parent Should Make

News of Muna’s death devastated Nepalis in Houston and across the world.

Community members raised nearly $40,000 to help Anita travel from Nepal to the United States and attend her only daughter’s funeral. More than 100 people gathered in Houston as Muna was cremated according to Hindu traditions on September 9, 2024.

Anita had once imagined traveling to America to celebrate her daughter’s education and success. Instead, she made the journey to perform her final rites.

The Case Against Shah

Shah was initially denied bail. At a later bond hearing in December 2024, a judge set his bond at $1 million.

Capital murder is among the most serious charges available under Texas law. However, an accusation—even one supported by disturbing surveillance footage and prosecutorial claims—is not the same as a conviction.

The public sources reviewed for this article do not document a final verdict. Shah must therefore be described as the man accused of killing Muna Pandey, not as her convicted killer.

For the Nepali community, the legal distinction matters—but it does not lessen the tragedy. Muna Pandey left Nepal to become a nurse, support her mother and build a future. Instead, at only 21, she became the victim at the center of a horrifying Houston murder case.

Her story should not be remembered merely because of the man charged with ending her life. It should be remembered because she was a daughter, a student and a young immigrant whose American dream was taken away before it had the opportunity to begin.
