BURLINGTON, Vermont — A woman hospitalized with severe head injuries following an alleged assault at a Burlington apartment died Sunday evening, prompting police to upgrade the charge against her husband to second-degree murder.
According to Burlington police, officers responded to an apartment on South Champlain Street around 5 a.m. Saturday after multiple 911 callers reported a fight and requested an ambulance. Officers found the woman unresponsive in bed with substantial head injuries. She was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in critical condition.
Investigators allege that Bal Khadka, 44, of Burlington, struck his wife with a large flashlight while three children were present.
The woman was pronounced dead at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday. Police said detectives subsequently submitted updated filings reflecting the murder charge.
Khadka was ordered held without bail and is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday. The allegations have not been proven in court.
