Constitutional monarchy comes to end. Communist Party Maoists take the reign of the government. Promises to establish rule of law and promulgate a new constitution. Months pass, years pass and finally the government decides to dismiss the constituent assembly after being warned of action by Supreme Court for being unable to produce constitution within the deadline. The system collapses. Even the dim light of hope among people is destroyed and the next day Supreme Court judge is killed in the daylight. Well, what could all these events mean to a nation of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln who believe in life, liberty and pursuit of happiness but the fangs of “The Evil Empire” and communism spreading over once peaceful nation among The Grand Himalayas? As a friend, we could not have kept quiet and so Browns finally felt obligated to pour their feelings and sentiments about the events that are bringing about the total collapse of the nation that was just trying to recover from the meaningless over a decade long civil war that killed thousands of people and destroyed the unity which was one thing that Nepalese felt proud of since the time of their unifier King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Good thing! They chose New York Times one of the most reputed paper all across the globe. Browns have brought some facts in the article that was being hidden and censored by Nepalese government for a long time. The loss of over 16000 lives in the civil war, per capita income of $490 and over 45% unemployment are not just horrible figures but sad truth for anybody who is concerned about Nepal and Nepalese people. Well, America has been helping Nepal for a long time now not just economically but has also provided asylum to thousands of political refugees who fled Nepal to protect their lives from the regime that can’t stand anybody who speaks or acts against their agenda. Moreover, America has done all it could by providing jobs, shelter and legality to work and live in USA to Bhutanese Refugees that were a major problem of Nepal for a long time. The ever increasing number of asylum applicants, famous artists fleeing the nation unable to make a good living and the daily street protests that Maoists conduct by employing youths are among the few reasons why the global community’s attention is moving towards Nepal. As the foreign nations have threatened to withdraw the aid that consists of over 3.4% of Nepalese economy, the demagogues of Nepalese parties and the government better wake up. A good friend of mine who just returned from Nepal told me that none of his school mates or college buddies is in the country. Some have gone to Qatar, some to Singapore, few to Australia, UK and America. He further joked that only people they got in the country are kids, grannies and grandpas and political leaders with few unemployed youths to run strike programs for them. The nation has really been brain drained and due to the lack of opportunities and environment entrepreneurial types have abandoned the nation despite their patriotism and love of their birthplace. I won’t blame them; I know how they feel for I am one of them! (SEYOM BROWN and VANDA FELBAB-BROWN(Writers of “Nepal, on the Brink of Collapse”http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06...
