Family of conflict victim to move International Court if amnesty granted to Maoist lawmaker Dhungel Balkrishna Dhungel (File photo) Family members of late Ujjan Kumar Shrestha Wednesday warned that they will move the International Court if Maoist lawmaker Balkrishna Dhungel, who has been convicted of murdering Shrestha, is granted amnesty. Talking to journalists at a sit-in organised near the southern gate of Singha Durbar, the seat of the government, Sabitri Shrestha, sister of murdered Ujjan Kumar Shrestha, said that the government was trying to politicize the verdict of the Supreme Court (SC) in a bid to protect Dhungel. She also warned of self immolation if the decision of the court is not implemented at the earliest. The sit-in was jointly organised by Conflict Victims' Society for Justice, Maoist Victims Association and Conflict Victim Orphan Society. The sit-in was organised demanding withdrawal of Tuesday’s cabinet decision to send recommendation to President Dr Ram Baran Yadav to pardon Dhungel. The protesters carried placards reading slogans- “take action against murderer lawmaker Balkrishna Dhungel”, and “implement the SC's decision”. Jagat Das Shrestha ‚ 81‚ and Ram Kumari Shrestha‚79‚ who are parents of late Ujjan Kumar, also participated in the sit-in. On May 10, 2004, Okhaldhunga district court had found Dhungel guilty of murdering Shrestha. Dhungel then moved the Rajbiraj Appellate Court where he was given a clean chit on June 25, 2006, overturning the district court’s verdict. But the SC upheld the life term awarded to Dhungel on January 3, 2010 after Shrestha’s family moved the apex court seeking justice. However, Dhungel has been avoiding arrest till now. nepalnews.com
