Sino- India War occurred between India and China in 1962. It was a dispute between two great nuclear powers. The border dispute was the main cause of the war. However, the important internal factor for this war was because of the Tibetan uprising, when India provided asylum to Tibetans. The war between two countries has affected Nepal Positively as well as negatively. Similarly, this war has created a puppet show between these two nations in Nepal. A month after the visit by Shyam Saran as special envoy of Indian Prime minister, a delegation of 21 senior Chinese leaders arrived in Kathmandu (Capital city of Nepal) on a six day visit. This delegation was one of the highest-level delegations to visit Nepal since the beginning of Revolution in Nepal. China indicated a serious shift in china’s policy toward Nepal. It can be seen as the beginning of Chinese interference in Nepal internal affairs. China has always gained good faith in the Nepalese mind, and one of the ways that china is so successful in doing so is by pointing out at Indian Interference in Nepal’s internal affairs. There is a deep tension between India and China in the issue of Dalai Lama, borders that lies between India and China and so on. Thus, China is taking such an actions in Nepal to confront and counter-balance India and will continue to act similarly in other countries in India’s neighborhoods. China has always been worried about political instability in Nepal and the possibility of external powers using Nepal against its strategic interests. Both China and India viewed the monarchy as the most stable, credible and dependable partner. The king played China effectively to counter Indian Influence. After Nepal became a republic, China lost its most reliable partner. China cultivated the Maosit Party in Nepal because of the growing tensions of Tibetans in Tibet, particularly after the March of 2008 uprising. China wanted to cut the underground activities of thousands of Tibetan refugees settled in Nepal. Nepal is the most easily accessible entry point to Tibet and it has second largest Tibetan refugee community in the world. Tibetans in Nepal are alleged and pressuring International forces all around the world to take actions against China to free Tibet from China. China was deeply concerned when six Nepalese parliamentarians visited Dalai Lama in 2009. It is well-known to both Indian and Nepali leaders that even though they may pose themselves as anti-Indians or pro-Nepali they are aware that at the end of the day they will have to deal with each other, and that they cannot ignore one another. It is because of geographical, historical, cultural, and socio-economic linkage between the two counties. It is certain that both the country will temper their policies towards each other. However, the Indian policy of preventing Maosits from coming to power and the Maoist counter- tactic and growing anti-sentiments in Nepal, seem to be pushing the country into uncertainty. This will definitely not serve the interest of either country. Moreover, China- and India have been competing for influence along the Nepal- China and Nepal- India border. Soon after India provided development assistance of Rs 100 million for remote village of Nepal, china responded with Rs 10 million for construction of Library, science laboratory and school building with computers in the village near to Tibet to counter influence India. China is opening eleven china study centers that china has built in Nepal along the border of India and Nepal. Furthermore, in response to the Chinese attempt to extend the railways link from Tibet till the Nepalese border, India is also planning to extend its rail link to Nepal along the border. India has also announced assistance worth Rs 10.88 billion for the expansion of railway service in five places along the India-Nepal border. The power- game between India and china is slowly unfolding in Nepal. Whether positively or negatively. The puppet show of India and China in Nepal will affect and slowdown its progress and its politics in the days to come. If China decided to play a important role in Nepal it will for sure have security implications in India. The win- win situation for India and china lies in respecting its independent buffer status of Nepal. Which will also ensure political stability and faster progress of Nepal serving India and china’s Interest along the way. Last edited: 31-Jul-11 07:28 AM
