While I'd have rather like to see her give the speech in Nepali, I don't think she deserves this much of hatred because of the speech. Her position doesn't require fluency in english, does it? Why are we hating her? For having a horrible accent? We all have accents. For being a mantri and not behaving like one? Well how are they suppose to behave? Mantris are chosen by public, they don't get their in virtue of their resume or "professional caliber." Let's calm down on our mockery here.

I agree. Should have used interpreter instead. Its not the matter of speaking without accent; its the matter of conveying understandable information to the audience. She would have earned a huge amount of respect if she had asked for an interpreter instead of showing off where she failed miserably. Its a matter of nation's pride as well. You definitively do not want to have goosebumps when your there listening to her. Also, as Nalapani suggested, she did not have to deliver speech in English if she knew she would suck at it. Her attitude, overconfidence and unprofessionalism have a combined effect on this.

So it's not the accent she has it's her overconfident attitude that you are mocking? Dude, she is giving a speech, you gotta show some confidence..besides I don't find it that overconfident. I find myself defending for the lady not because I am from her party OR that I didn't find it a little funny, neither would I support her giving another speech in english. What I was merely pointing out was that a butchered english-or accent, is not something that should be mocked like what you guys are doing. NEpalko bejjat? As if everybody else is doing a great job keeping the ijjat that one bad speech ruined everything. I do sense some prejudice on our part; maybe guys are just pissed off that these people are elected mantris and MPs out of nowhere, no qualification and are representing Nepal in international stage, that too with illegible accent. I am not trying to defend her and not trying to argue whether she should use interpreter or not because it is past issue and this can be a future reference for Nepalese officers. But I want to state the facts (I dont have proof to claim though) - She pronounced around 50% words correctly (forget about the fluency) and I can say she is probably within the top 100 literate CA members because there are other hundreds who even can not read Nepali Language properly. And how about some who even can not sign and attending the adult literacy classes? - Most of you are ignoring the fact that the 80% SLC pass students of government schools have exact  same pronounciation as this minister. Generally called 'Bhaisi english'. She might be good in leadership but should have thought twice before going to the rostrum.  She should have practised at her hotel too and even she struggled. About the interpreter, I am not sure but I think if you speak in Nepali you just give the attendees the copy of your speech (in english). It would be pride for her but who cares except we?

I really don't know this lady so I cannot make any counter point on this; I do realize that many, if not most, mantris and MPs in our country are not qualified. I heard one day Prachanda said that our assembley is based on WEST MINISTER model. LetsCompare Nepal's parliament with Britains West minister - Nepal has about 600 members in the assembly. 300 elected and about 300 nominated.   The people are nominated in the name of proportional representation.   Proportional representation gives easy route to assembly through the back door especially to the people who lost the election. There is no miniumum criteria of education to be member. - Britain's west minister has HOUSE OF COMMONS consisting of elected people... and  HOUSE OF LORDS consisting of nominated people (similar as nominated people in Nepal but not from any party).  House of lords consists of top people, sportsman like lord sabastian coe, top industrialist like richard branson and alan sugar, top doctors, engineers, lawyer etc . Just compare that to nepal. Nepal assembly has killers, diplomatic passport sellers, some members slaps public servants, some are found in brothel, some carry guns, , some are even found stealing electicity in their home from the street wires. how pathetic is that? Forget about being ministers. These people don't even have mandate. They have already lost mandate one year earlier.   Now they are self extneding their term. And I feel we nepali people are somewhat fool that we are demending consitution from these people.  Even if constitution is made, nothing will happen, same people will rule. In last two year nobody seemed to be demanding about  health, roads, medicines etc.  Britians dont have written consitution. All  we nepali do is to rant about CONSITUTION.  We have spent millions of dollars  each month in so called consitution when people in KARNALI are dying because of lack of rice which does not cost millions.  Does consitution is really our priority? I really don't think so. 30-40,000 rupees  goes to this 600 assembly member each month. Add to that out of 600....over 200 have already been to foreign visit .  The expenses of each members comes out to be over 50,000 each month.  18-20 corores goes each month in the name of PLA to maoist party.  Those PLA       bhustigre.............sit in the camp has been an easy cash cow for maoist. isn't it a sad state? We will never have  britains like  house of lords because all the parties would want their party to be nominated. AND COMING BACK TO THE SPEECH.   That woman is bastard. Whoever makes fun of nepal is bastard. Why is anybody trying to defend the indefensible.  These ministers get chance to go to new york. So rather than sending any doctors , intellectuals....or even anuradha koirla who have first hand experience in dealing with thousands of AIDS victims in nepal she goes herself.   She knows nothing about HEALTH. Such is a health minister of nepal. Forget about being nervous or anything. Anybody can make out she knows nothing about health sector in nepal.  Its not about accents. All the people in the world have accents. But going into such a big platform, Nepal should have made sure that they made their voice heard and understand. It is little unfair to compare Rajesh Hamal's english with someone who probably grew up doing " Ghaas Daura" in village. Nothing against Rajesh Hamal....i have not seen a single movie by Rajesh hamal but from few of his interview one can tell that he has an excellent profienciency in english language. He is probably one of the most intelligent person in Nepali movie industry. Thanks for the video above....the GUY has an excellent insights and communicating skill.....I can compare this interview to Naseerudhin Shah's interviews. I just wish he would some of the non mainstream movies....and show his skill. I think he can act as well given the right story, script, and a director. Coming back to the Mantri's accent, let me just say that the accent is horrible, no one should be ashamed of bad accent but bad language is something everyone should be ashamed of. I bet many who are making fun of the Mantri on this board themselves do not have skills in speaking their mother tounge. The point is, we have no shame in not speaking the language (any language)  correctly. It does not have to be ENGLISH.......how many of us really are ashamed of not being able to speak Nepali properly??? may be non....but if someone is not able to speak English properly...it becomes a joke. I have also noticed that us the southasians do measure one's proficiency in english langauage as an academic acomplishment. If one speaks good english he is automatically an intellect. I do not think language is a measurement of your intelligence or wisdom. One who learns English and becomes fluent is nothing less than the other who learns maithali and becomes fluent in it. But we seem to consider the one with better English more intelligent and competant than the one who learned Maithali. We also see those folks in the parties who try to show their class by speaking English. The point is, it is wrong to judge someone's intelligence based on how well their english is. But this Mantri's problem is just not English. I also think she was nervous and not confident. Even if the speech was in nepali...she probably would have delivered it with the same pauses and breaks. She probably is not a good reader either. The secretaries are laughing when she is delivering the speech. Pangu nai pangu ko rajya bhaye pachi yestai ho....these are the things that could have been done to avoid the disaster and none of them were done... Getting an ambassador like Anuradha Koirala to deliver the speech Getting one of the secretaries to do it Writing the english words in nepali and saying it Reading it in Nepali and handing out English copies to the listeners Reading it in Nepali and using a translator

I will be more concerned about what she is doing for our contry rather than just judging her by her english accent. Aaaksh nai khasla jasto nagarda huncha sathi ho. I am sure most of the people in our country have that accent. If you go to the government school even the English teachers have that kind of accent.

Some people  are so blind that they do not feel ashamed to refuse the thing that is appearing right infront of thier eyes. This is the prime reason why our country is so so behind in every fronts. Some one above gave her " Kudos" perhaps without knowing the meaning of it, someone above is more concerned what she is doing back home. Only true idot will not be able to judge her personality and capacity if he watche 2 min of this video. The point is not about engish accent,  the point is about your intellectual ability, the point is about knowedge on the subject matters, the point is about preseting your country in front of world leaders..I can go on and on,  if she can not speak a word, and then forget about her dealing and negotiating infront of other world leaders. It is a matter of self judgement than being over confident or be excited about being in UN hall in NYC. I am pretty sure for her getting an oppurtunity to see AMERICA is the bigger achievement than anything. Proficiency in english is not important, but basic communication, interpersonal skills, presentations skills in world forum is desirable. Tell me where am I being unfair to her? If English fluency meant anything at all, King Birendra, Sharad Chandra Shah, Pashupati Shumsher and Kamal Thapa would have rendered Nepal into Switzerland decades ago.

I am not calling him intelligent because of how well he can speak english. I am calling him intelligent based on this intelligent answers. Just you tube some of his interviews in English and Nepali and you can see him deliver his insights that are avove par for Nepali Movie Workers. For the others who think why someone like the Mantrani is a leader in Nepal.....The reason is that there are lots of people in Nepal who feel better at someone like Mantrani representing them. They would rather vote the Mantrani over Prakash chandra Lohani, Baburam Bhattarai or Ram Sharan Mahat. So to ask why do we have leaders like the Mantrani is quite immature when 70 %- 80% of people are like the Mantrani. The same reason why Sarah Palin is so popular in US. She has lots of critics but she also has whole bunch of followers who can see russia from their house along with her.
