I too would like to know if someone knows the answer. I have a sense that it's not legal.

Yes it's illegal uploading and downloading both . But there is very less chances of getting in problems depends where you download from .

It depends upon what you are downloading from the torrent. You cannot download copyrighted contents from the torrent or elsewhere. However it is 100% legal to download open source/free software from the torrent. For example you can download Fedora from http://torrent.fedoraproject.o... using a torrent software.
