What kind of camera do you have ? Having Camera & Taking pictures only won't help you need to Learn to use various Softwares Like Photoshop,Fireworks so that you can develop better ideas about editing ,enhancing Pictures . If you are really trying to get into Photography best solution is to get DSLR , Use youtube,Google to find various guides how to take better shots :P then you can slowly think about taking classes once you have basic knowledge .

The best way to learn is by doing, however, a little knowledge about the basics goes a long way.  Basic knowledge about the settings on your camera is a good start. Read the manual then read it again.  Basic knowledge about exposure - aperture and shutter speed is also a good starting point.  You don't necessarily need a formal class. Books and online tutorials can be a big help in getting the theory down. Then it's just practice, practice, practice and don't be afraid to experiment. Take a lot of pictures, look at a lot of pictures and figure out what you like and don't like, take a lot more pictures. Go to a Graduation Ceremony, wedding ceremony and take lots and lots and lots of picture.  Take pictures of Trees, snow, cat, babies playing, baby smiling. Start taking pictures now.

Nice thread and agreed with Nepalinetworks and purana kagaz. I think learning as well and practicing more and more is the only way to learn photography. Jacksparrow ji, Good to hear you're interested in photography. Nikon D90 is a good camera. I own Nikon myself and love the features. I would say to start with check out Youtube, it has some great videos. Takeing photography at a local community college is a good idea too and it won't cost too much. You should share some more of your pictures with us, would love to see your work. This is one of my all time favorite photograph taken during cold winter morning. ;-)

Not only rule of thirds. I suggest everyone to follow the rule of photo composition. It will definitely help you get great pictures.And, dont put your subject in centre.

ne0, Nikon D7000 is in between D90 and D300s as Nikon mentioned on their website. This is better than D90 in any case. It is going towards FX format camera in many cases like camera controls and features. After this my next camera will be D800 (I was planning to buy D700 but there is a rumor that they discontiue this model and comming up with D800).

Good Job Guys. And when you post pictures, write some technical descriptions so that newbie like me can learn the technics. seventy9, I like the second one better. First one is little off composed for me. Lots of things distracted my view on your photograph. If you do HDR, better shoot in RAW so that you won't loose any detail with 8-bit compression of JPEG files. Sometime it's almost impossible to get details when you save in JPEG format. I like your setting +/-2EV at night. I don't know which camera you are using but some Nikon DSLR allows you to take 5 in AEB mode which gives you more range for color tones. Just my two cents. I must say I really appreciate Umesh's blog. I am a beginner myself with D90, and I sure am learning bits by bits from his blog on digital photography. Poonte, I am glad that u liked my blog and it's helping you. About your above photos, in my personal view, I like composition of first picture but it's missing sharpness and color contrast of that orginal cherry flower. I see you are trying to focus on flowers and blurr your background but your whole frame is underexposed. I don't know which mode you are shooting but  I would use A (Aperture Priority) mode in this case to create shallow depth of field which will control shutter speed automatically. And if photograph is underexposed then we can use exposure compensastion value to adjust brightness of the picture. Keep shooting. Your composition is on it's way but photographs are not that much sharp. This is my personal view only. Thanks for sharing.

What will be the best one if we have to choose Nikon D7000 and Canon 7D? Nikon D7000 is cheaper than Canon 7D,(In price of 7D we can get Nikon 7000 + extra lens) and i Heard this Nikon Beats Canon 6D and it is in compare to Canon 7D. When I google it, only few differences like megapixels and difference of shots per secs of 6 and 8. However, Nikon has better quality. etc etc. So, not really a big difference. I am thinking to buy either one of these. ( I am feeling hesitation cause i've been using only canon from a long time)Does anyone has experience on both of these. Please lets share.

 Atomic Bro,  I had a Canon point and shoot and it was a great camera. Then I upgraded to Nikon D90 and it is a sweet camera as well. Although, I cant compare point and shoot against the DSLR, I think both Canon and Nikon would be almost similar qualitywise. So, I would say but the one which gives you a better deal. About macro lens, If you want to upgrade your camera to FX format in future, I will suggest this, Nikon 60mm 2.8G But if you are not planning to go with FX format and want to stay with DX format camera (D90, D7000, D200, D300 etc) then I will say this, Nikon 85mm 3.5 G Atomic, I do not have any experience with Canon camera. In fact I am looking for someone who can write about Canon on my blog. Anyway, but in my 3 years experience with Nikon, it has more flexibility to choose lenses and it's CLS (flash technology) is amazing. Nikon vs Canon is like Coke vs Pepsi. Canon users say, it is more easy to control button and easy to navigate and Nikon users say, it has best innovative and best technology. If you are interested in photography and planning to upgrade camera in future, better to stick with one whether Canon or Nikon or Sony or Olympus because when you buy lens, you can use that in another body (it is 100% true with Nikon but not with Canon). If you buy DX (small size sensor) canon camera and you upgraded to full frame FX version of canon, you have to buy lenses that are compatible with FX format but Nikon allows you to use DX lens on FX camera and vice versa. I will say Nikon ( I may be biased in this case because I have never used Canon camera). Hope it helps.

Appreciate your comments, guys. The original of the first picture had a better exposure, although I still don't think it would be en par with better photographers' standards. I played with it a little in Picasa to add more shadow -- perhaps a wrong decision, but it may have reflected my mood then.  beast: my camera although a megazoom does allow me to take full control of it - shutter speed, aperture and all those kinda stuffs.

Hey guyz.. I am planning to buy a DSLR but do not have much idea about them. I have seen that with point and shoot, cannon is the best. But with DSLR, I hear Nikkon's name more than others. Which DSLR do you suggest me to buy? My budget is $700. With this price can I get a decent DSLR which won't be obsolete in few years? I saw that Nikkon D7000 is in the range of $1200, and with this price, I hope it is REALLY GOOD! but sadly, it is out of my budget :( I have always been passionate about photography, now its time to follow my passion ! Your suggestions needed ! Thanks.

 pentax produces good DSLRs for the price you can afford. also, if you are not a pro photographer and just started photography, get started with one of the megazoom cameras (also called bridge cameras), they have almost all features DSLRs have, some even have features that DSLRs don't have but the thing is they are not fully developed as in DSLR, e.g. a DSLR might offer shutter lag shooting upto 5 minutes, but a megazoom might offer only up to 1 minute.  canon is good for point n shoot, but that's not true regarding megazooms, look into panasonic, they are highest rated megazooms. fat beast or drkanchoo owns a megazoom, check somewhere up in the thread and ask them before buying a camera. but, if you really want a DSLR for about 700, i'd say go for pentax, they are good camera makers.

 @livetorock bro, if you want to buy canon get a used 40D with 50mm f1.8 lens If you want to go nikon get a D90 (get used if you can find one) with nikon 35mm f1.8 lens you will love it. I havent personally used D90 but some of my friends own it, its brilliant.  @lamopuri,   Thanks for taking a look. I mainly use canon 400 and 500mm lenses along with 100mm macro. I always shoot raw and use photoshop for processing. If you have any further questions ping me in flickr if you got account.

The photo you took above of yellow field and blue sky is very striking.  Can you post what camera and technique you used, as in aperture features etc.?  Did you do any post exposure changes with photoshop or any other software?

 Nepali American Bro, First of all thank you for your comments. I took the above picture from a moving vehicle and did not do much post processing except for recovering some blown up sky color. Here are the technical details of the picture. Camera: Nikon D90 F-stop: f/11 Exposure: 1/250 sec ISO: 200 Exposure bias: 0 step Focal Length: 28mm No Flash Manual Mode, High Saturation, Hard Sharpness, WB Auto, Digital Zoom 1,  In the mean time, Happy Maha Astami folks :) Post your Dashain Pictures.  lol guy_tensed. There was no sauce in the picture above. Its just the reflection from the momo as I took the pictures as soon as they came out of the cooking vessel. Here is the one with sauce. Hopefully, it will look more like momo. :P Sparrow
