I used to live in WV when I got a ticket in Southern VA for speeding in the middle of the night trying to catch the Monday morning work. This was more than 3 years ago. I didn't have time go back an challenge the ticket in VA, and I paid the ticket by phone. I now live in NC. A self-initiated background check yesterday showed that I have a "misdemeanor" record in VA and that I was "guilty in absentia." The sentence was: "Fined: Yes. Court costs: Yes." is this a REAL misdemeanor? I've never ever had a criminal record, and I've never ever been arrested. What is the best way to approach this misdemeanor? Thank you. Did the ticket had mandatory court appearance? If not was the ticket Pre-payable ? And if you have already paid for the ticket 'absentia' simply means you were not present on the court date which in your case will be fine. Did you ever received any warrant for not attending the court ?

There was not mandatory court appearance and the ticket was Pre-payable. In fact I paid the ticket after 3/4 days after I got it.
