Hello guys, I needed some help with the tax form. I am an undergraduate student. I received the tax form 1042s which reports gross income of around 19500$ (tax rate =14, income code = 15, exemption code = 00). I was wondering if I can get any deduction for the category "Scholarship and fellowship grants excluded". The IRS web says about using the amount used for tuition and books and stuffs. But I am confused. Also, I have got W-2 and 1042s. Is 1040NR-EZ the right form? Thanks! Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. mankokura Last edited: 24-Mar-10 09:12 AM

This 1042 is reported to non-residence who was compensated in any form equivalent to the stated amount. This means you have to file 1040 NR ( not 1040 NR EZ). Give a visit to nearest tax office, I will recommend H & R Block who does NR tax filing ( most do not do in their office, it will take a while to know the result), ask them if they do NR. Most of the time if your scholarship grant is gone to pay the tuition, may offset directly and your reported income will be lowered? Not sure, but in 1040 filer I am suggesting and right way to do. If they can do it , that will give you some refund. Most 1040 NR filer ( single ) uses 1040 NR EZ and no one had has suggested to have itemized deduction which is more than the deduction allowed to 1040 NR. You were right , your tuition, state withheld , mandatory fees not health , books and stationery and computer ( I guess for all). This what I heard from ex filer and getting more refund than straight EZ filing

Thanks for the reply syanjali! I greatly appreciate your response. Few more question: Last year I had both W2 and 1042s and I filed 1040 NR-EZ and not 1040NR. Was it wrong? I googled online and it says to use 1040NR-EZ if you have no dependents, claim no tax treaty and so. Can you please explain the difference? Do I get more refund if I file 1040 NR as opposed to 1040 NR-EZ because of more itemized deductions? Are there any other itemized deduction beside state tax? Right now, I have included the state tax as the only itemized deduction and 3650$ as exemption for being single. Thanks again!

Couple years ago , I helped a student of IA with 1042 but, was illegible to file 1040. Couple times I tired to practice on 1040 NR and Most of the case it takes you straight to 1040 NR EZ once you put your filing status is single. One student told me s/he always filed 1040 EZ and always itemized , because s/he is going to get more deduction due to tuition, mandatory fees, books and stationary. On EZ you are getting only personal exemption only. That is the reason , I am suggesting to itemize. Give a try how it looks on paper filing and then to online.
