I just read SIS's comment on one of the threads and remembered something I was wanting to ask around. I figured I'd not deviate the original poster's topic; so here I am: So I went to a dealership last week for a scheduled maintenance, knowing very well that the money being spent was not all that befitting. But I did - like many others, fearing I'd lose more if I wouldn't care (and spend) for it NOW. Anyway, one of the staffs handed me a "suggestion" sheet, which said something like --- "We recommend that you get your vehicle's Transmission Flushed ....sooner the better". I remember going through a similar situation about 10 years ago, when my old car totally stopped reversing - which means someone (mostly myself) had to literally push it every time I had to pull out of a parking lot - pretty embarrassing, and tiring too at times! With God's grace, I think I 'successfully' abandoned that car. ;-) Back then, one of the mechanics strongly suggested not to flush the transmission, as it would completely stop the transmission engine from functioning, while many others suggested flushing it out to fix the reverse transmission problem . Since I got rid of it, I escaped away from dealing with all that. Now, fast forward 10 years - I get a similar recommendation (no reverse issue this time though), and a quick Google search brings in mixed advices. Wonder if someone here has dealt with something such, or has a 'post-flush' experience . Also, the price they quoted for the Transmission Flush is $900. Is it even worth spending all that, while the car seems to be running the way it's always been? Even more, if the flushing screws up the transmission, it's like pushing the car down the cliff with a wallet included, no? ~@~

just the transmission flush costs around 105 USD.
RUKDHELL · Mar 8, 2010 8:12 PM
Transmission flus will not cost you $900. May be $79-120.I think they are trying to rip you off. I have done that before, nothing wrong doing it. It's been 3 years and I have no problem untill now.

If you have Tuffy's in your area, you can go there. Their rate is $99.

My transmission now has a hiccup after a flush. Hiccup meaning while driving my car will slow down at certain intervals. It will slow down for about few seconds and will pick it up again. I was told that this happened because the auto shop people used low quality transmission fluid for my last transmission flush. Transmission flush costs around $99.

Question and experience shared by 'Sajha' is very genuine and everyone is impacted if not today in the future. One thing what you should not forget is - the staff is a salesman and his job is to sell the service to the customer like us and he seem to be using consultative sales approach. What your car needs is not what he tells you but it is you to figure out what kind of service is due with your car. My suggestion is - first of all to consider what is the total mileage you have driven or car has so far. If it is over 70,000 miles, it may need transmission fluid changed but you don't have to get ripped off by service staffs with $900.00 just for flushing transmission fluid. However, since maintaining transmission is vital for your car, get couple more professional opinion. Last edited: 09-Mar-10 08:52 AM

If you do it, will cost you 30-35 buck. Last edited: 10-Mar-10 03:29 PM

nine hundred Dollars $$$$$ is he talking about replacing the transmission or the fluid. If it is for transmission it is a okay price and if it is just flush ,very very expensive... The manual should tell you when the transmission flush is due, or the car itself will tell you. Specific on the answer, may be after we get the model and year of the car.

Thanks everyone for your valuable suggestions. I am fully aware of the fact that $900 is way too high for a Transmission flush work; however, they have broken down and itemized their recommendations where the labor itself is $120 per hour, and it's a 2 hour work with filter replacement, and some additional work, and complimentary oil change (for which they've always charged me $110 each time: I know that's expensive too). I can possibly have them just do the flush and not touch anything else for a lower price, but my concern is more toward the after-effect of it, than the initial price. One of you mentioned that you've had no issues in the last 3 yrs after getting the T-flushed, which is good to hear, and that's exactly what one would hope before taking the risks and paying all that it takes. In the meantime, as Power Ranger's comment implies, getting your vehicle serviced at a random auto-shop could increase the possibilities of additional risks due to the low quality fluid that they might use, and possibly improper handling that could cost you more in the long run. I like abodh_1's advice too. Getting additional professional opinions is definitely a smart idea before plunging into a conclusion.syanjali, can you be a little more specific? How do you do it for 30-35 bucks?shyamBDR, if it was $900 for a transmission replacement, I'd keep on driving without worrying a thing. That estimation was just for T-Flush, with couple additional complimentary services. Also, I did not know that the manual would have T-Flush time-line, but I'll check that out too. Thank You! The car is E-Class 2007 Mercedes-Benz.Here's an excerpt from a website (referenced at the bottom), which gives a rough idea of what actually is done during a 'flush':The Dangers Of Flushing... Flush machines do what they say; they force high pressure cleaning solvents back through the engine and transmission and clean out some of the accumulated junk that has formed. Now engines have small passages and galleries through which oil or automatic transmission fluid flow and there are one-way valves that keep the fluids from backtracking for whatever reason. By using an aggressive cleaning procedure like flushing, large chunks of accumulated sludge are broken off and forced backwards through these galleries and valves and, more often than not, lodge tightly and block them. This cuts off the normal flow of the fluid and causes lack of lubrication in an engine and abnormal or no shifting in a transmission. The results are expensive repairs, or more often, engine or transmission replacement. Ref: http://autotechrepair.suite101...

My price Quote is do it yourself: As per the auto-manual it is not recommended to replace transmission filter on accord. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... gallon of transmission fluid 14.99 X2 =29.98 + a funnel + a hose etc. Question: What you trying to do? Are you looking for a cheap way to flush the transmission fluid or trying to be more informative? May be Both.If your car is not a very luxurious one , any local auto mechanic can do it. You would not see any difference in the service rendered to you by those locals as well performance in your car but you will see the difference in draining out your wallet. Then WHY pay more, because they are dealer and deserve more. Do you think they will add premium transmission fluid ? I do not think so. They make you await for hours and hours even that is half an hour job. Look on the u-tube and get more info before you head to any mechanic. It does not hurt your car if you drive another 10K miles unless it is completely drained out or your car has some problems due to sluggish transmission fluid. If it was a regular visit and your dealer suggested you to have a flush, I would not be worried about it. Last edited: 11-Mar-10 02:23 PM

This is the biggest b****it i've ever come across,,$$$900 for transmission flush.. one quart of transmission oil costs about 10$ ( most types) and filter costs about 15$,,and it's about 1 hour of work. Well if u do it yourself there is plenty of instructions in the net and also repair manuals in autozone help. Pour some clean transmission oil while the drain is unplugged and let it carry out the dirt. It works just as good as any flush,,fill the transmission with clean oil, run the engine and transmission and drain the oil again,,if you want to drain the old oil in torque convertor as well,,fill it up with the new oil and new filter and seal the thing off.. That's it..cant cost more than $100 ..

Just had the Fluid and Filter changed today. I didn't want to take a chance and do the T-Flush this time, so I passed that for now. @syanjali & @GA, your suggestions were invaluable, but I was not looking for a Do-It-Yourself solution. I am all for getting hands dirty, and experimenting techniques on my own, but not so much with the vehicle work. Also, my concern was more about whether flushing a transmission is a good idea or not, especially with that high of a cost estimation they gave. Regardless, your notes will perhaps come handy in the future, and meanwhile other readers can make use of it. ~@~

Saajha, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell to you....... if you catch my drift. $120/hr for labor? The repair shop at the dealership where I bought my car charges $70/hr for labor and that too is on high side. $110 for oil change? Ask around. Normal rate is $30 or less. Just because you bought Mercedes does not mean you have to continue throwing money down the drain.
riten · Mar 19, 2010 9:27 AM
@ Riten you are right.....and thats funny, did my own oil chnage on my merc --- with the latest and the greates oil out there.....total cost 86 - 1.5 hr of work -- with the saving I bought khasi ko masu for the wknd There are tons of forums out there and some ppl will even send you pics and walk you through it. Besides some car washes do lube and wash together for 40 bucks...again if you have that extra dough to burn go for it.... with that 900 I'd buy a cruise package to alaska
mucho_fiesta · Mar 19, 2010 9:38 AM
Oh: This all about a Mercedes Benz, then it is okay to spend money as he or she likes. So, it is not a query of flushing transmission fluid rather advertising owning a MB. Got the point.
syanjali · Mar 19, 2010 11:41 AM
@Riten, Have a look at the following link and feel free to take it on them if you're interested (I'm not!) : http://www.silverstar.mercedes... Add taxes to it and figure out on your own."$30 or less for oil change", maybe. But let me give you an analogy here. I don't pay for 'Microsoft Office' as they state here: http://office.microsoft.com/en... I pay $0 for it (Talk about legality and copyrights ;-)). But people do, and there's nothing wrong with it. That's the price they ask for - and they choose to go with it, with their hard earned money. Hope you catch my 'drift' here.. @mucho, if paying $110 twice a year stops me from shivering in Alaska, so be it. I prefer staying vegeterian, and hanging out in the Contiguous US for $220 less. $900 was not quoted for oil change, btw. @syanjali, I ain't selling my car - so there's no point in 'advertising'. If you meant to say 'boasting' instead, read it up again. I was simply answering someone's question about the make and model of the car. Also, since you advised a 'do-it-yourself' tip earlier in the post, I'm tempted to advise you something from my side:With a slice of what you pay for your apartment rent each month, you can perhaps own a Ferrari. Might take few additional years of payment, but it's eventually yours (You knew it, didn't ya'?): so, what's the biggie! I don't see anything to boast here. And yes, Transmission Flush was the question, which Khusbu and Power Ranger already answered, based on their experience. I don't see a need to expand it any further. And I think I have thanked you already for the input you've added!~@~

Yes, we should not be elaborating more. Let us know, did you have the ATF -flush and did you use the dealer and paid the estimated price? Last edited: 19-Mar-10 07:42 PM
