I know its a stupid question but it never satisfied my curiosity from childhood. We know that the earth is round and its very very huge. But, if it is round how people living in southern hemisphere don't have to hang upside down? I know we read in geography class that they don't fall off due to earth's gravity. Ok, thats fine I accept it but what about the round feeling? Imagine we place a small ant in a very very large globe that the size of a building lets say. But even then the ant has to curve its body upside down when it goes to the bottom of the globe regardless of the size of the globe. Then how come people in the bottom (in south) don't have to do the same thing? Was watching National Geo about Columbia tragedy 7 years back and all of a sudden this suppressed question came to my mind. Interestingly, one child has also asked similar question here: http://m_jreat.instablogs.com/...

As far as I think you dont feel the round shape because of the relative size difference between your body and size of the earth. Just a guess. Sparrow

Damn EARTH is ROUND???? Damn I thought it was FLAT.....tell me you are KIDDING RIGHT???

The earth's gravitational force is directed towards the CENTER of the earth therefore there is no sensation of hanging "down" at the southern hemisphere. The "down" will ALWAYS be  towards the CENTER at ANY place (or hemisphere) on the earth's surface.  You can NOT compare this to ant hanging on a big round phantom globe coz in that case the force experienced by ants at the very bottom will be directed towards the center of the earth (down) which is directly opposite to the center of the hanging phantom globe and hence they will feel the hanging sensation (blood will flow towards head). I hope I made this clear.

Pret AatmaOk. I understand gravity is towards center of earth and blood will flow towards center of earht, but even then why people don't hang upside down?

But, if it is round how people living in southern hemisphere don't have to hang upside down? ====================================================================== What is upside down?   Just because American people who made the globe made northern hemisphere top.  Ask many australian. They make globe with southern hemisphere at top and northern hemishpere at bottom.  Many Australian think they are not in downunder. Just because there is gravitational pull you seem to have feelings like top and down. But in universe there is no such thing as top down, upside down. Everything is relative. Another Ant on orange or football is a silly argument. Because even if ant is in football then you are watching ant with relation to the earth.

top/ bottom, up/down. right/left, east/west these are all terms created for our convenience, if you were looking at earth from a spaceship, you would not know which side is top and which is bottom.

Forget about direction, top, bottom, east, west everything for a while. Your feet will always be towards the centre of the earth, and your head away from it.  You see upward from the earth, yet you go to moon,  you cannot look down to see the moon. u still need to look up.   I wish i knew a better way of sayinng this..

You better stand properly without parting your legs.. otherwise your balls will fall on the ground. That's why we wear underwears... so that we can part our legs while waling.. haha. That's gravity. Similaryl bras are necessary for women.
