Look at this eqv: 5 Nepali (average) = 1 Jhapali, 5 Jhapali = 1 Syanjali, 3 Syanjali = 1 Nuwakote ... Reality :: Nepali from all district are "sajjan", few of them are "fataha".

I used to live with a Synjali in kathmandu. my friends used to warn me to be careful with him. Once I had gone to my home ,when I came back he changed the room  without informing me. What u feel when u come back to room  and there are somebody else? More than half of my things were lost . It was discusting.

Please don't take it as an offence to whatever "-li" s but it's true at least to some extent, and false too!! Our knowledge, attitude, skills and behaviors are mainly governed by the society we live. I am not a sociologist but we don't have to be a sociologist to understand this fact. Mostly, a child develops her behavior learning form seniors. For example, speaking "bad words" is more common in Mongoloid families in Nepal compared to orthodox Bahuns. Obviously, that 'generally' determines what words that child uses when he grows up. Just think of your "guffadi" friend, it is more likely that her/his family members too are guffadi, it's natural, it's how your friend knew how to be a guffadi. Look even in US, kallu's don't hesitate to commit a crime but gore's think many times. Lamjunges (officially, I'm not from Lamjung) are storytellers, syangajali are comparatavely more literate/cleverer, jhapalis are even more literate and probably cleverer too; every Jumli knows about courts and similar messes. I have not met so many Dangalis and others. Specifically about Syanjali and Jhapalis: due to their education, they probably had a generally superior thinking power compared to ordinary people. It is not unusual to use your skill for your own benefit, a human behavior, and that's what they did. Their attitude to benefit only themselves was induced to other people in the society, and every child born now will attempt to learn their senior's attitude even now. Damn, they are selfish...personally I had some 3-4 interactions with Syanjalis..they all turned out to be snakes. I have one of my best friend, who is Syanjali and a couple of Jhapalis who are good. I think they migrated form hilly area and had to compete with Rajbansi and Bangali, as the time passed they became more clever according to the needs which is far away from others need, somehow they could not act according to the present environment and society. Where ever they went could not leave their past and could not mold accordingly, therefore they started this proverb. You know about women in Bharatpur (Chitwan, ride bike and their husband sits in the back) same way they are very upfront and very smart,  I like that.

I used to think Jhapali’s are clever too. While working in Damak I asked some of my friends and colleagues as to how they felt about the opinion of them being considered “clever.” They took it very positively and said that’s their strength. They enjoy the idea that rest of the district people in a way "fear” them. I as well enjoyed working with them and learned  good positive life lessons.   It sure makes sense for them to be clever and smart yet not cunning. It’s because they live by the border of India-Nepal, they have very mixed and diverse ethic cultures from Bahun, Chhetri, Newar, Rai, Limbu, Gurung, Rajbansi, Madeshi, Dhimal, migrant from Darjeeling etc and not to forget the Bhutanese refugee population. Darwin’s “survival-of-the fittest” is manifested in their livelihood.   I think Jhapa is a nice place for farming with 3 season rice farming.   Just to make sure I still think they are clever but not cunning. Also to add I say “We at times see the things the way we are rather than the things are”

I also used to hear something like what Syanjali has mentioned. Such kind of inferences must have some links to historical observations. Jhapalis being cleverer is understandable because, compared with the other folks who stayed in the hills, they were cleverer in the first place to realize the the benefits of migration. Also intermixing with the people of different decents and particularly an interaction with a relatively forward and educated community in Darjeeling must have helped them to be "smarter" in some sense. And, it'd be just a matter of few incidents of working together with ordinary hill folks that smartness would manifest itself in the form of cunningness, as is common in cases of smartness devoid of a corresponding ethical counterpart. In general, I used to hear a lot about Purbeli and Paschhimeli, the former sometimes being considered  smarter than the latter. Of course, such generalizations were based on personal observations and do not appear to hold any more. Environment, hardships of survival and many other factors would probably contribute to a particular group being cleverer than the rest, and in the present context, it can be true that the (migrated) people in the plains generally outsmart ordinary people from villages in the hills.

I had one jhapali in my apartment, initially he was like a homeless, i found him apartment, found a job for him, everything... but that bastard made all of my roomie moved to another apartment leased by himself and din't give me a month notice either. this is why don't trust jhapali. f4ck hypocrites!

Re: Jhapali: I was wondering who of my friends/acquaintance is/are from Jhapa.  I could think of only one.  He is very very very "chattu".  Kura-ma ta uuslai jitnai sakinna.  He used to be a politician back in Nepal.  Kangressi ho kyaara.  He is involved in Nepali politics in the US as well.  Chattu ko pani maha-chattu. Tara... As far as I know, he has not harmed anyone.  He is actually a nice guy.  What's more, he is very entertaining.  Good to have in the parties. Re: Syangjali: One of my friends is from Syangja.  Bahun ho, tyo pani Syangja ko.  But he is is very very very sojho. So much for the stereotype.

Dear Mattare; As you from mattar, you do not see and realised it and wondering why they are accusing for , so does Syanjali, Saptariaya ( who are alleged getting fingerprint of walking people).  All over the nation and abroad certain group of people get such remarks like, syanjali, jhapali so does to jews to be too crooked, and sardarji to be too simple / stupid. Jhas are like khatriya of nepal ( khatriya of India are known as rajput/chettri). These are over smart people whose own act are somehow  over the border line makes them name called, "आफ्नो आङको भैंसी नदेख्ने आर्काको आङ्को जुम्रा देख्ने ",  We are one of them of this proverb, because we  left the house & country , staying aborad still could not get away entertaing ourself by name calling. This is the reason some blogs gets out of line.

We are very prejudice and can not stand on someone's success or smartness. This happen to me last weekend. I had a trip to Boston via Niagara Falls.I had this problem before with my car. On the way to Boston from Niagara my car started making noise and feel it has something to do with Axel shaft or Ball joint. The Bostonian host took me to the nearest AutoaZone and figured out needed a ball joint replacement .  Our host log on internet and made couple phone call and about an hour we see a walking garage in his parking lot. We chilled out with chilled beer and our car was fixed. We are saved and guess what this is a gentleman from JHAPA. See how smart he is, we are always jeleous of other's success and smartness. But it is true some of them are oversmart makes them smelly but you can not judge all the same. No Doubt. Yes, Jhapali are smart and knows how to get things done.
