In my last trip to Nepal, I went to Manakamana temple. The trip was very good and memorable. However, en route to Kathmandu, in front of our vehicle I saw a truck full load of buffaloes (water buffalo; Bubalus bubalis). Those buffaloes were imported either from Terai region of Nepal or from India. Usually, male bufalloes are used for plouging, pulling carts and other physical labor. Its use is similar to use of horse in western countries before mordanization. Females are used for dairy purpose. However, when they grow old, both male and female bufalloes are exported to the location like Kathmandu. Their skins are used for shoe production and carcas is very popular for making popular nepali dish Mo:Mo. Furhter it is most preferable animal for ethnic group Newar, mostly residing in Kathmandu valley, for meat consumption. Though the issues of sanitation during animal killig and meat processing needs attention, I want to talk about the transportation of buffaloes. More

Nepal needs a humane slaughter house. I have seen how those buffalo are killed in Bhaktapur long time ago. They tie their legs and hit the poor animal with the other end of the ax in its head. Very inhumane way of killing the animal. Wish the Butcher Union of Nepal would create one butcher house and the meat was transported to the shops in a hygienic way. I know this is just a wishful thinking. Sid

you must have been raised somewhere not rural because it appears that you saw it just only in your 'last trip to nepal'. besides, the regular 'treatments' they get everyday, in the villages, are far more inhumane than what you saw and can ever imagine. consider the truck-ride as a perk for the animals, before the great 'liberation' from the all the treatments at 'home'. indeed this is an act of brutalism but they are going to be slaughtered anyways after they reach ktm...who cares if they die en route? and the sad part is, they actually do suffocate and die...and to make it worse, we do go to the buspark chheuko everest momo to chew on the horror happened in the truck 4 hours ago, with a bottle of mountain dew in our hand. dhanya ho haami nepali.

And what do you think of the treatment being accorded our nepalis brothers and sisters by the SSB along the India border? Is that treatment any better?

Supporting raju161 on what Sujata Jost said: watch/hear @ 1:31, or the entire thing at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... Opposing raju161: Slaughter can be humane when you render that animal unconscious before you kill it! That's what they do in slaughterhouse worldwide.
