So, top students of class not enroll the schools mentioned above, rather join Shanker Dev, Min Bhawan or other commerce college, and now the private management colleges.

darknight, you know one thing, if studied hard, everyone can pass in first division, but think about the people who pass in third division, or think about the ones who will pass getting 35% (when i was in Nepal 35% was the pass mark), wow, they are the most talented people as they know how much to study for passing, unlike the students who secure first division, so I think most of the Public Schools in Kathmandu are producing brilliant students. My point is brilliant students go to the public schools in Nepal.

They all go to Shankar Dev, Amrit Science, Tri Chandra and Patan Engineering   simply reason is all the student leaders are more active there and they are the future leaders of Nepal like we have today. That is the reason why at the age of 30 I have joined Shaker dev campus to get my BBA after completing my hotel mangement graduation in 2000.   good huh!! in 3 yrs i will have double bachelors......the reason is simple dude politics.

 I really feel this very strongly....It doesn't matter what you do in slc coz lots of brilliant students lose track during their high school...No matter how good those high schools and +2 might be..   For the part of high school ..I think most of them are overated....I have seen students doing Isc (ASCOL)..with less than 60 % then scoring good marks and securing merit list l while...students from so called good +2 and coleges with good score still sturggling...this is very much evident in engineering fields....

Too high or too low is always abnormal.   BTW, commerce/business is studied only by second divisioner or lower is no more a fact. its been a myth from last few years. Every year I find many slc graduates with high 70 around percentages taking management.

  Darknight, It's all a matter of choice and opportunity.  I've seen kids from the so called "top" schools mentioned above attend lowly whack-azz community colleges here whereas, there are a few who're straight outta those rural SLC schools and end up getting into the ivies here.  Dude, there's nothing to brag about the "top" Nepali schools as IMO, all schools in Nepal were never upto par with the schools in India (in terms of spoken english/grammar, extracurricular and recreational activities, etc.  Proof in point: King Birendra and Gyane too were sent to Darjeeling).  Hell, most schools in KTM still don't have enough room for a decent basket-ball court, let alone a soccer field!! And B-students as SLC 2nd divisioners??  LOLs.  You high, dude?  Where did that profound pseudo-intellectual wisdom of yours come outta??  I've seen idiots end up becoming doctors, lawyers and engineers under the Nepali educational system where anyone with any sort of connections can pass ANY exams.  Even know of a few peeps here who cheated on the SATs (and they mention that it's rampant in Nepali SAT test centers)!!  Never heard of such a phenomenon anywhere else.  Seriously folks, there ain't nothing to brag about the Nepali educational system at all.

How do you quantify the term "TOP" in SLC?   I have seen some people who have studied their high school English in Nepali medium, passed SLC in second division, and graduated from university with distinction.  To me the opportunity places you at the top or at the bottom.

It all depends on indivisual person and his/her ability than being a graduate of such and such TOP ranked or LOW ranked school. Let me give my own example here if you guys don't find it boaring to read.  I went to a school remote part of Nepal where finding a science/math teacher was a dream. The headmaster used to go to neighbouring indian city each year at the begining of the session and grab some indian(with fake Bsc certificate) who used to be driving Riksaw there, bring him as a science/math teacher. No nepali or English he could speak. Teach for sometime and learn some nepali language and go to another school which would give better salary (remember that the headmaster et all used to give less than half of the regular salary to those Bsc-ers). I passed slc with 51%. Just to tell you that ,due to lack of teacher, there was no OPTIONAL MATH subject in that school. (When I was doiong my Isc some of my class mates, who were from city area and pass out of boarding schools with high score, used to make fun of me saying 'wa wa..wa... Optional math napadhi pani Science padhne bhako'. Guess what they failed the ISC in the end). Then I went to a nearby college for ISc where again we didn't have math teacher. The administration brought a math teacher from India, who could not speak Nepali/English.  sometime he used to walk out of the class room not even  speaking a single word, just doing math on the board. One day, as usual he was doing a problem in algebra or something where there would be no chance of showing up trig functions like: sin, cos etc. A student from taplejung (who would not speak/understand hindi) asked a question: Sir tyo KASari aayou? Guess what the teacher answered? 'Aare bhai yaha to COS hi nahi he'. The teacher only caught the word COS from the word KASARI!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, long story I passed Isc with 52%. Then moved to Ktm, joined ASCOL for BSC, Passed it with 56%. Joined Kirtipur campus, finished masters in one of the Science areas with 81%. Joined for Phd in one of the North American University. Finished it and now teaching in one of the reputable North American institutions. My whole point here is: the OPPORTUNITY and PASSION are the key things to success. Yo Samsara, if you don't know the facts - Dipendra and Nirajan studied in Budhanilkantha School. Paras studied there too but was rusticated from the school by the British administrators after which he went to Darjeeling or somewhere. Where do you get the idea that I don't know about Eton? From what I know Dipendra passed SLC in Nepal, and went to Eton College for grades 11-12. I was saying that the top Nepali schools are (like) the ivies for Nepal. You should be sensible enough to understand that this does not mean Nepali schools stand anywhere close to the ivies. The 10,000 hours rule has no relevance here, and even then it might not necessarily be true for there exist many contradictions to this rule. Thanks for the comments on my rhetoric. So, to change the topic or rather bringing the train back to the track, here's the cliche: SLC 1st Division - join Science SLC 2nd Division - join Commerce SLC 3rd Division - join Arts How true is this?  If so, how has it affected our national development? Going from the often sited process flow above, Nepal should have outstanding scientists, mediocre businessmen and downright dysfunctional artists. But I see the opposite in most cases. What gives?

Riten the problem lies here. We see thousands if not millions of Nepali students applies for US VISA for the education every year. And Thousands will be granted and leave Nepal for USA to study. But once they land in USA, they will never turn back towards motherland again even after graduation, OPT and several years of working experience. The bottomline is that these US Nepalis are selfish. No body cares or bother about how to develop Nepal. Once granted GC, these AmericanoNepalis will settled in USA for good. If i'm not wrong, the first batch of Nepali students came to US in late 80's. Then the trend continue and now this trend of coming to USA with the intention of pursuing college education has become a farce and a business. Just imagine how many Nepali engineers, technologists, business entrepreneur's have been educated in USA so far but then how many even came back to Nepal. Just give me some examples or names of US graduates who came back to Nepal and is doing good. Therefore in my opinion, US Nepalis students simply lacks the moral obligations and wills to return home and help to input the new modern, liberal, sophisticated, innovative, creative ideas in running and developing of Nepal and or for its goodwill. Just like that nepali first nasa engineer/scientists will be working towards the development of usa and not Nepal. What a farce.! skh

Samsara dahling FYI, the dentists, doctors, retailers, photographers, designers, bank managers, politicians, and many others who are in Nepal are graduate from Bangladesh, India, China, Japan, etc. Plus what you compare to students going to usa and other countries is beyond imagination. it is simply laughable i think students graduating from USA to other countries(combined) annually is about  20:1 in addition, all the graduate students(USA) from  late 1980's till today will tell you a lot of stories. till today i haven't heard any US graduate politician, lawyers, doctors, dentists, business managers, .....etc in Nepal working or been successful. Therefore based on the evident, US education work only in America but NOT Nepal. Bottomline US college education is a farce! Prove me if i am wrong! I am willing to hear and learn. That's what Sajha is for! Also said that if NepaliUS students upon landing in USA have the will, the capacity, the strength to work so hard and graduate, why then are these graduates so scared of coming back to Nepal and applied the knowledge and skills with sheer determination and wills which they have overcome the obstacles in the USA...............!! reason #1. There have been no evident of any US graduate from any field showing up in Nepal and do some great job towards the development of new Nepal. Some even say "Oh what is DIRO" , sorry i can't eat that!  i eat burger, sandwiches, pizza, salad only dah! then speak in slang american word like, "i really appreciate it" instead of "saying thank you very much" (UK). Samsara many Nepali pilots trained in Russia/Ukraine. Some of them also trained in USA but they come back to Nepal. We need more US graduates from other field as well dahling. Yes, i took Commerce and surprisingly in my class there were roughly 50 students and atleast 15 of them had over 80 percentile in SLC and 20 had over 70 percentile and remaining were borderline first divisioners. My first division wasnt the factor for me to decide my faculty. Secondly Sajhakohero sounding off on all the nepali who stay put in America and never look back. Well my question to you is that; Where are you? What have u done to help so far? Its not that bad that most of the young people have come here to further enrich their future, look at India for crying out loud. Indians started coming here long b4 we did and it took them quite some time to be afluent so that they could go back and help their mother country and their people. Frist of all we need duel Citizenship and then slowly over time things will transpire. Frankly American Indians in the last ten years have done quite a bit to help bolster their economy, same needs to happen back in our country but it demands lots of patience, labor, time. So instead of looking at the bigger picture you are playing a role of a colossal hypocrite.

I am not sure about law school though, but I have heard that international students are not allowed to enroll in law programs (I amn't too darn sure about that). साझामा आउने हरु सबै ठुला ठुला नगरपालिकाका बासिन्दा र सबै privet स्कुल जाने हरुको जमात र अमेरिका बासी हुन जस्तो लाग्यो । गहन अध्ययन त हैन तर सर्सर्ती हेर्दा र सरकारी  पढाई को मगज को उपज मात्रै हो , तेसैले अमेरिकि बासिलाई मन अबस्य नै पर्दैन होला। अनी यो साझा ले उनिहरुको सन्ख्या बढी हुना साथ उन्का भनाइ ठीक हुन्छन भन्छन बने त्यो सम्न्ती सोचाइ हो , यहाँ मैले माओ बादिको कुरा गरेको हैन हाम्रो समाजको चारित्रिक बर्णन मात्रै मा सिमित गर्न खोजेको हुँ . कसै कसैले एस.एल.सी तेस्रो श्रेणी मा उतिर्ण गर्ने हरु ARTS पढ्न जान्छन, हो जानु पर्ने बाध्यता हाम्रो शिक्षा नितिले दिएको छ, तर यि तगारा हरु पार गर्ने पनि देखेको छु । तेस्रो श्रेणिमा त्यो पनि गणित बिषय नलिएका , राजनीति शास्त्र लिएर मध्यमा ( Intermidiate) पास गरेका मान्छे ले पुल्चोक क्याम्पस बाट ईन्जिनियरिङ को डिग्री लिएर दछ्य कार्यकरता भएका छन । मेरा गुरु Finance मा MS गरे पनि आफ्ना Statistics मा अध्ययनरत भाईलाई पढाउथे । शायद उन्का भाई तेतै तिर डाक्टर उपाधी लिएर काम गर्दै होलान। कसैले तपाईं भनोस वा नभनोस आँफै मपाइ हुने शिक्षा हाम्रो धर्म , सन्स्क्रिती र समाजले हाम्रो दिमागमा जरो गदाइदिएको छ। शहर मा बस्नेले झै गाउमा बस्ने ले समानुपतिक सुबिधा उप्भोग गर्न पाएको छ कि छैन। टुकिको भरमा पढ्नु पर्छ, २-३ घण्टा हिनेर नजिकको बिद्यालय जानु पर्छ , स्कुल जानु पहिलो प्राथमिकता हैन, कतिपय त ल्याप्चे मै थन्किएर बस्नु नपरोस भनी असिछित बाबु आमाले स्कुल धकेलेको हुन्छ। हाम्रो धर्मले चाकडी गर्न सिकाएको छ , सक्ती को पूजा गर , निमुखा लाई शासन गर , "Divide and Rule " यो ब्रिटिश को हैन आर्य समाजको जड् सिद्दान्त र मुल मन्त्र हो , एही भुकाइ अमेरिकि बासी हरु गर्दैछन , यो तिमी हरुको दोस हैन हाम्रो समाजको दोस हो , किन्की हाम्रो समाजले ETHIC सिकान  , शासन गर्न सिकायो । तेसैले पहिलो स्रेणी का सबै उत्कृष्ट अनी तेस्रो श्रेणी क निस्क्रिस्ट ।  एसै क्रममा एउटा प्रसङ यहाँ ल्याउद छु । चिया पसलमा बि ए मा अध्ययनरत विद्यार्थी हरुको जमात रहेछ र चिना पर्ची को क्रममा एक्जनाले भुकी हाले म बिज्ञानको विद्यार्थी हुँ भनेर अर्को ले स्यानो सुस्थ स्वरमा म ईतिहासको बिद्यार्ती भने , बिज्ञानी विद्यार्थी के गर्दै छन थाहा छैन तर ईतिहासका भने प्रथम श्रेणिमा प्रथम भएर अहिले पढाउदै छन । जती पनि बकवासी कुरा यहाँ लेखिदै छन त्यो केही हद सम्मा हाम्रो सन्स्कार्को देन हो , किन्की हेप्नु र हेपाइचे कुरा जन्मजात गुण लिएर जन्मेका छौ , तेसैले ठाउँ बादलिदैमा गुण बदलिदिअन्। सबै अमेरिका भिसा पाउने हरु कोर्पोरते अफिस म काम गर्नु हुन्छ हैन त ?  So what they have good living their, Making money and helping family with hard green cash.

Syanjali : When I read your post, I find it equally true, yet equally funny. True in the sense that, you did do some analysis of the posters above in a correct sense and funny, coz I don't think this is the thread to do it, in other words, your communist inspired analysis don't fit into the thread. When this thread started it wasn't clearly about "rich", "poor"; "good" and "bad", it was simply which school students prefer. I didn't see any problem with that topic. This thread got bad because of you and Sajhakohero and others, who brought their own biased mentality and start talking about those things which is utterly irrelavant to the topic. If you wanna give your social commentary, you are welcome to do it in other thread, but butting into a thread and dishin out your own irrelavant frustrations is quite funny, IMO. My own bias: If you hadn't have generalized and trying to degrade all Aryans and culture, then probably I wouldn't have written it. I wanted to say, "Please save your classless-commie mentality for some other political thread." But then I won't coz I don't know if you are one. :-) Happy Sajha-Surfing!!

You got  the first division grade does not mean you are the brightest student as well  all who goes abroad and gets degree are not the smartest. Can I say they are the luckiest bastaaaaard and opportunists?  Because they had the source and utilized as they could & should not be claiming they are smartest of all. Too arrogant and Hippocrates. One of the reasons I asked , are those entire American visa holders working for corporate America ? If not are they the greatest dumb? CT, What's your point? Syanjali: I didn't label you as commie. I said I wanted to say like that but I do not know what are you. Being a reformist doesn't mean you have to uproot everything, oppose every view which has a relationship towards the past and hate lucky people. As far as my understanding goes, the main problem which you had was the definition of the "smart people". First, why don't you explain your definitions? What should be the criteria? This thread isn't about the stark difference in lifestyle or the depredations of the poor or the opportunity which they have, what they can afford or even the definition of smart. Overall endowments for research and overall development for 2008 in the ENTIRE world was highest at Harvard University: $36.556 Billion (its about 9 Billion lower already due to the subprime mess)...But in 2006, in terms of per capita endowments, it was Princeton.  C'mon dude, you expect University of Tokyo to top $36 Billion and change in grants and donations  that are mainly used for research and development, including infrastructure, etc.???  Dude, see the image below and view the allocation of funds for the entire educational sector of Japan including schools and Pre-schools, by the Ministry of Education in Japan (hope it is conventional knowledge that endowments by Private firms/parties are still an unheard phenomenon in Japan).  Hell, even if the University of Tokyo was awarded HALF of the nations funds for it's R&D, etc, it would still be A THIRD of what Harvard has ( as Japan Govt's Total Mgmt Expense is 1204.4 Billion Yen; Total Science and Tech promotion Expense is 852.6 Billion Yen.  Taking USD 1 = JPY 96.1 as per today's FX rate, the Total Funds allocated for the WHOLE University sector in Japan is $21.4 Billion ONLY!!  And the irony is that there are a 163 public and national universities in Japan (Good golly Miss Molly, I'm so generous as to say that the Univ of Tokyo gets HALF of the entire buget for universities as it prolly a lot, lot, lot less than that...Moreover, even the "half" it comes to a paltry $10.7 Billion...chump change as even MIT, Yale, Univ of Texas, etc. get MORE than that: HALF the Total Budget of Japan's University sector aka Univ of Tokyo...And where does the miniscule amounts of Japan's endowments fit in??  Surely not even in my wallet for sure.  LOLs   Hey, I'd totally understand if you mistook the Yen Billions for USD Billions instead!  LMAO See wiki below for additional reading (I used a few other sources and issues I had read about years ago as well)...Maybe you'll know better before you start correcting the wrong peeps here on sajha.  All in all, Don't come back trynna impose any more BS on me hereon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...
