hello all, just need a quick help on tax return filing. how do I file a tax return when I'm a dependent (but was working actively for a part of the year) and spouse is actively working throughout the year? I had been filing the tax return jointly with me as primary and spouse as secondary till last year. Can I do the same this year or do I have to switch to my spouse being primary? Thanks in advance!

As long as you are gainfully earning taxable income it does not matter who makes more income. You file MFJ as you did last year. If you want to be a spouse, put your spouse on first tax payer and your name on second tax payer. Is it answered your question?.

I will suggest every taxpayer should know filing own tax unless you have a complicated tax filing. Just down load 1040 instruction with 1040 form. Read it , what applies to you highlight them on instruction book as well on the form. Once you have done this it will be much easier to file tax online. We like to make corporation rich and we fallow the heavily advertised tax filing software mostly it is Turbo Tax. You may see eligible for free tax filing. There are certain thing makes you ineligible and have to pay the fee. It's been couple year I have been using and paying nothing using Credit Karma.
