We Nepalese are often very quick on judging people. When someone's behavior doesn't align with our value system & past experiences, we tend to put that person on a negative side. We may even consider that person a threat! However, it is important to understand that living a non-judgmental life (in most part) is conducive for a happy life. When you start living a non-judgmental life, your mind & body starts healing as the amounts of thoughts, fear, anger, frustration, likes, and dislikes will slowly come down. Your mind will now have that extra energy to put it somewhere else. Also, it is equally important to understand that a non-judgmental life is not an absolute value. There will come a time in life, where we must be judging people based on the circumstances of the situation. We might be in a profession where we have to take instant decision based on someone's behavior. Nevertheless, we must strive for living a non-judgmental life as much as possible. Our mind is conditioned by our past experiences and our value system. To make certain decisions, we look upon our past experiences and our value system. However, our experiences and value system are unique to our own selves. They are not total reservoir of knowledge. Two people sleeping next to each other will have no idea what the other person is dreaming about! Similarly, in waking world, we do not know what the other person is thinking about, what are his/her past experiences, and value system. Hence, coming into a conclusion and putting a tag on a person is, in fact, our way to mitigate uncertainty. Uncertainty creates fear in us. It takes us to an uncharted territory where we believe we are unsafe. Hence, labeling people becomes an easy tool to pacify one's mind and maintain the status quo. Living a non-judgmental life aligns with Bhagavat Gita as well. It is in fact a part of karma yoga where one tries to maintain the "Samatvam" (equilibrium) of the mind. In this 'sama" state of mind, one is carefree, peaceful, and happy. When someone is negative towards you, try not to react. Because reacting negatively is like grabbing a hot iron in your hand and thinking it will hurt the other person. The cortisol hormone released by your brain will only affect you! Life is short. Everybody is struggling in their life. Everybody is trying to fulfil their desires. Try understanding their desires and if possible, following dharma, help them achieve their desires. There is no need to be judgmental and straining one's own life!
