Hi all, I recently asked about unemployment filing. So my contract was ended due to this crisis and i'm looking to file for unemployment benefits. But the consultancy is telling me to continue health insurance from them and will bill couple hours a month for me for that purpose. i believe i won't be eligible for unemployment if im not mistaken. Could anyone suggest me what i should do? Thank you

Go a head and file unemployment benefits. Did you work whole year in 2019? You have to make certain amounts every quarters. Insurance you can apply through state or Medicaid. This is statement from gov of my state, ‘ Anyone who may have lost their job will be immediately eligible for Medicaid and should apply’. I don’t Know what state do you live. I’m not sure about your citizenship or GC. If question asked in Citizenship interview , just explain emergency situations. COVid-19 have eased so many red tapes.

Thank you RamKumar ji, I worked for most of 2019 expect 2 months. My current status is EAD with pending I-589. I'm not looking to apply for Medicaid because i learned it might be a public charge rule. But i was looking to apply for unemployment. But the consultancy keep asking me and telling me to keep health insurance. So will be ineligble for unemployement benefits?? if i keep health insurance as the consultancy will run 4-5 hours a month for me to keep the health insurance going

Everything looks good. No Medicaid for you, it will mess up in both interviews.Go to your state website check your eligibility and Call them to get the info yourself. Yes If you in their insurance thing, you could be considered an employee. Depending upon bill hours, u will be getting partial benefits. In my state, Gov let you draw unemployment even if your hours been cut- but money will less Just forget about insurance, pay out of pockets. Or buy your own plan. You have to include the past employer names and how long you worked and all that. To be safe don’t tangle up with them for insurance. You can always look for free health plans in your city that is not run by federal or state governments or buy your own.

Thank you very much. It cleared lots of confusion. And one last question, where can i compare and find the best health insurance?

Just google cheapest health insurance plan in your state! Your employer should cover you for the end of the month or up to 90 days if they have more employees than 20 or something.its called COBRA. Or work with your company that way u pay out of pocket to get insurance going. Make sure they cut hours to Zero or may be 1 per monthLast edited: 03-Apr-20 04:28 PM Last edited: 03-Apr-20 04:31 PM
