JENNY I think that's a great idea. I have heard you get a lot of points to get pr and 3 years of work permit after graduation in canada.aime of the Masters programs are only 1 year and cheaper than US schools. Good luck

at Ehho2- Thank you! I have only completed my Bachelors from USA but I'm hitting my 2 years mark at my work. Will the part time work count as I worked 20hrs a week during school. I went ahead with the PR assessment but my score was below 67 :( So i'm looking for the Study permit option.

When I did my assesment many years ago part time work also counted but it was a long time ago and the process has changed many time so definately do the research. Study permit is the best route I Think for anyone who has less points. Best of luck.

I think you would need police certificate from US rather than Nepal.

Sorry Jenny I am not aware of the Visa process i would assume it must be similar with what you did when you applied in the US. Just apply a university and ask then what do they need.

Not many job openings in Canada. I searched indeed Canada . there is 1 job opening in 2 days, compared to hundreds of job openings here in US

I just searched jobs in Toronto and saw hundreds.i guess it depends what city you were searching in and what you were searching for. If I were you I would move to a city where there are 4 jobs with work permit or pr vs living in a city where there are millions of jobs but no work permit or pr.

I came to Canada for a Master's program and now am a permanent resident. So, here are some things you may need to know: 1. Admission standards are slightly higher than in graduate programs in the US. Most engineering graduate programs are divided into 2 streams: thesis-based and course-based. Thesis based means you get scholarships. Course based means you get no scholarship and have to pay to study. Getting approved for thesis based is slightly difficult because most scholarships are "public" i.e. government funds, which means priority is given to citizens and permanent residents. So, please consider what you want. 2. Students do not need FBI reports. You only need FBI report and police reports from Nepal if you are "immigrating" i.e. coming as a permanent resident. Students don't need police reports. 3. The current rules are extremely favorable for international students. Even if you do a 1-year master's, you get a 3-year post-graduate work permit (like the OPT in the US). Then, after you work for a year, you will now have a Canadian degree and a one year Canadian work experience. Which means, in the current immigration system, you will get 500+ points. This means, every international student is able to become a permanent resident in Canada after graduating and working here for a year. Can you say that about the states? When Canada educates you, it wants you to never leave Canada again. 4. Forget about getting jobs through Canadian job boards. Canada is very strict about hiring people with Canadian degrees. Even American degrees don't count here, unless you are a top-graduate from a good engineering school in the US. The job market here is small (Canadian economy is only 10% the size of the US economy, so you can imagine the jobs aren't that many). So, Canadian citizens and permanent residents get favored over even people like me with work permits.

thanks mickthesick for the info.Like someone said earlier , there may be millions of jobs in the US but without a Work permit you have a shot to zero. There might be only one job in a city in Canada , but at least with a PR you get a shot to apply for the job. Lots of TPS holders, at least in sajha are living in hopes to join desi consultancy and finally getting papers. I would rather go to Canada and work with dignity vs faking and lying to get a job.

@ajoshinp The point of a Canadian PR is that it allows you to come to Canada and do whatever you want. You can do some survival job while you update your qualifications (this is what most nurses and doctors coming from Nepal do... they engage in some survival job and enroll in updating courses so their education/training matches the Canadian standard...they are then allowed to take the license exams for nurses/doctors... this applies to almost all professions). In the meantime, you don't have much to worry about. PR holders get preferential treatment i.e. your tuition fees for the upgrading courses are very low, sometimes they are subsidized by the government, FREE HEALTHCARE! free skills training to you and your spouse, free English lessons if PR holders need the lessons, etc. There are too many benefits to holding a PR.
