For married couple living in different state, can we file federal joint and then state tax separately ? has anyone filed tax with similar situation?

I believe so. My wife and I filed jointly - she was in the US for few months and then went back to Nepal for few months. She did not have another US address like in your case, but you can still file federal tax return jointly and do the state ones separately. State filing didn't apply for us because we're in TX
