Hi knowledgeable people, As you know a child (not US born) below 18 yrs can receive US passport if the parents are US citizen. How can a child get US citizenship certificate based on his US passport? Note: Please don't tell me child does not need any citizenship certificate. Passport should be enough. I know this part. Thanks,

Hi Wanton, Thanks for quick response. The child had already received the US passport couple of years ago when he was below 18. Now child is above 18. Do you think we can still use N-600? It wasn't very clear for this scenario. Thanks,

If your son already had the US Passport, you really don't need the US citizenship certificate. Virtually, US Passport is a acceptable ( even if it is expired) as a proof of citizenship. US passport is acceptable as a proof of evidence for travel, job, social security and almost everything. If you really want to get the citizenship certificate for your peace of mind, you can file N-600 at anytime which will take 6-8 months. The only reason I don't recommend you to get the citizenship certificate is the cost, which is $1,170. But the good thing is it is valid forever while the passport needs to be renewed. P.S. I didn't see that you have said that you are already aware of the fact that you don't need the document. However, if you decide to get one either way, my understanding is you can fill form N-600 anytime as your child has met all the requirement ( that he has become US citizen after birth but before turning 18 automatically). You can even send the US passport as a proof of US citizenship. Please note that N-600 is not an application for US citizenship but a form to get the recognition that your son is a US citizen. As said, your son needs to file N-600 to get the certificate of citizenship if he/you really want that certificate. He is no longer a child, so technically you wouldn't be filing for him, he will be filing for himself even though i believe you would be paying over $1100 for that.
