After finally deciding to jump into this Hadoop Big Data bandagon I have been self studying for around 2 weeks. So far its been a mixed bag ( i m from non computer engineering background). While studying Hadoop, it was recommended that i have some basic knowledge of Java. So went to a kindle shop, bought "Java: a begineers guide" by James Patterson and finished in a day or two. I was quite surprised that all the information in the book were something i read in computer class while in highschool for SLC back in the nineties and some from fortran during engineering. Nothing new. So if want to pursue a career in Java, i will have all the basics and fundamentals and learning new things will be quite easy. where as for Hadoop, its like learning a totally new thing. I feel like the effort level, i would have to put up for Hadoop vs Java, will be like 10 fold. So my question is, career/money wise, is Hadoop Bigdata 10 times better than Java ? What are the job prospects for Java ? What is the average payscale ? Calling for all the IT gurus here at Sajha. Your suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I dont think so. Its all depends on you and how you enjoy ur work. Basic Java is key but not the only one which lets you grab high paid jobs on that field.....there are so many frameworks in market and most of the companies have their own framework. But, if you have good understanding of Core Java, definately you will catch up. you will receive more comments from other Saja gurus Good Luck

Career/money wise, is Hadoop Bigdata 10 times better than Java ? - No. Salary rate is mostly same. You will have more opportunities/salary, if you know Hadoop on top of Java. Career wise, Hadoop is increasing market but cannot be compared with Java as Java is a full fetch programming language for all sorts of applications, whereas Hadoop comes into play as a part of application to manage big data. What are the job prospects for Java ? - its the most widely used programming language so far. Most of the enterprise applications are based on java. According to some source there are about 16000 java jobs opening everyday. What is the average payscale ? - It depends on location, experience & company. With 3-5 years of experience you will make well above 100k. Hope it helps you to decide. One thing I want to mention is, Java has alot of bits and pieces. Going through Beginners guide to Java might be piece of cake but knowing the Curves and Edges of Java is whole different story. Just trying to say that, Don't underestimate the level of dedication you will need to become successful in Java. As Hadoop is based on Java, knowing Java will help you alot with Hadoop career as well, although with other high level languages like Pig , Hive you do not require Java to be proficient in Hadoop.
