Maybe he did. Maybe he does not want to make a big deal out of it. How do you know? And even if he did not, he is using his brand and time to help out and that goes a long way too. No point pulling him (or anyone) down at an hour like this.

you dont have to pull money out of your own checking account if you have an ability to rally others to donate much more than what you have. I am not saying he did not contribute his own. Sometimes people's status is much more than his own checking account. Do what you can do best from your own area. At this time any dollar is a good dollar.
