I migrated to the US with DV visa and have been living in US for past few months and many times I find myself comparing life in Nepal and US. Although everything is nice and clean and structured, we tend to miss the Nepali way of life, food, friends and family. There are so many things I don't understand about living in US. Is there some book or website or article that outlines how to make the best out of DV status? For example housing, jobs, healthcare, can we get paid by government if l lose my job?

Assimilate. Your life will get significantly easier if you do that. To do that, make friends with Americans. Try not to hang out with Nepalese 24x7. This will help you become more independent. It's imperative that you're not dependent on others This will allow you to think rationally and make decisions on your own. Why do you need to have too many Nepali friends anyway? Re: Food, learn to cook if you don't know how to. 95% of Nepalese who come to the US have little/no culinary skills (Omelet and Rara/Waiwai combo w/ tea don't count). It's easy and once you learn how to cook, your tastebuds get easier. Depending on your qualification (education level), you might also consider pursuing advanced degree. After a year of residence, you get in-state tuition in most state Universities. When it comes to health care, housing etc, unless you don't make enough to meet the poverty line income level, you won't get free healthcare etc. If you don't have a job, you can apply for food stamps but I wouldn't think about getting that. Build credit. The more creditworthy you are, the more opportunities you get. You'll also save a ton of money in the long run while taking loans etc. Lastly, buy this book and implement in your daily life. http://www.amazon.com/American... Good luck!

May be I am overstating it, but i sort of feel that advice from most of Nepali folks (esp youngsters) is "not to hang out too much with nepalis". Isnt it tough, since the notion of friendship and relationship is kind of different for kuires compared to how nepalis are used to. In most of the cases kuires are ok with hanging around with a friend if it's a guy girl situation or unless there is really sth to do, not just to kill time, whcih most of the people from Nepal are used to. I'd say hang out with anyone as long as you can get along open mindedly. Last edited: 13-Dec-12 12:38 PM

DVs are not eligible for Food Stamp for at least five years after they arrive here as far as I know.

the best way to utilize DV is to go for a higher education. if you come from nepal with just a college degree, that degee won't give you a good paying jobs. if you go for a higher education, you'll learn many things outside of the book in the college which will help you understand the culture and make you more comforatble. it will help you learn better english and help you assilimate in the community. once you graudate, you should be able to find a job. once you have a job, you should be a ble to puruse your american dream.
