Heard many Sajhaites talk about Pokhara, Dharan, Kalanki and other places. Made me nostalgic about my JHAPA, the eastern most horizon of Nepal. Wondering if any Sajhaites from Jhapa. I am sure there are few.

I am not from Jhapa, but I have driven through the place few times. Birtamod bata uubho lagda Ilaam tira. I don't know about now, but that area used to suffer from chakka-jaam quite a bit. Bus driver haru le bhanthey, "yaha ta logney swasni jhagada bhayo bhaney pani baato bandh huncha." Alik maathi Fikkal ma bus rokda tyaha ko taja taja chiya pani khayeko chu.

Oh Jhapali Bro.. Nice to meet someone from Jhapa. Im from Bhadrapur, 15 kms south of Birtamode.Went to Emerald Acedemy there till 5th grade, then Delhi and then finally to USA in Jan 2000. But yeah, I was there last December for a month. Yeah I know Little Flower School, have few frends from there. I donno if you remember them - Aditya Parajuli, Ritesh Parajuli, Asish Kharel. I donno if you rem them. They were all from Bhadrapur. And yeah I do rem Divya Jyoti school, I guess it was the one founded by Chakra Bastola and one former Forest Minister ( dont rem his name ). Jhapali bro, everything is exactly the same - Kakarbhitta, Dhulabari, Charali, Budhabare, Birtamode, Sanischare, Chandragadi and Bhadrapur. I did visit Sanischare this time, didi-bhinaju live there. Except Birtamode appears huge after the completion of the East West Highway. They came up with an airport at Bhadrapur connecting to Ktm with three to four flights dailly. But yeah after the Maoist issue, its been a bit insecure. Also had a chance to go to Mai Khola, Damak, and yeah up in the hills to Fikkal Bazaar, Kanyam, Pathivara Devi and PanchaKanya Devi. Will probably go there again next year - cant wait. What do you remember about Jhapa..?? Who do you still know people back in Jhapa..?? Where are you in USA..??

Jhapali, sorry do not have any picture of the Birtamode Chowk. But yeah, the traffic post is still there. But few buildings came up there, the highest being six storey if I remember. And due to the highway it appears huge. The Birtamode Chowk is still the same where most of the revolutions started. The tradition is followed today as well. Last time when I went there, there was a hunger strike - for some unknown reason. The Mai Khola Mela on the day of Mange Sankrati - how can any Jhapali forget that day. It is celebrated with the same spirit. Do you remember the Prashikchan Kendra near the bank of Deunia Khola. It was also a famous picnic spot. Oh guess what, do you remember the gravel road that connected Chandragadi and Charali without going through Birtamode.? The UNHCR and HMG made it a concrete road. It just takes less than half hour from the airport to Charali. Your lines are really good - " j bhana jaso gara...."

Lau aayo arkoo jhapali,, padahi koo chaap lee gardaa sajha ma aunai payeko hoina,, jhandai jhapali thread sakina lagechaa. MAFI chahanchu sathi hary sanga. i am also a jhapali.. right from the very heart of budhabare,,,,,Jhapali and jai nepal bro,,,, i really don have much to share,,, i am a product of Kankai boarding in Birtamod, batch 2047, and finally ended up in amrika,,,,but enjoying the same bidhyarthii jivan. the times i had in jhapa going to fikkal, illam, pashuparinagar were great. ahile nai nepal jau jastoo bhayo malai taa..tyoo kanyam chaya bagan ko siririri hawa,, ani anli ali badal udhi rahekoo,, kastoo dami,, being from Jhapa,, i love my district,, but i do like other districts also.. so folks from other districts,, pls don get offended by this jhapali thread. We Jhapalis are very cozy by heart (alhouth some ppl are found reluctant to give us dera in their house) and we are always happy to share good times with ppl from all over nepal. last december i was in homeland,, and things are just incredible. Folks are doing great. now there is a straight diagonal (it really meets the pythagorous equation) from Charali to Chandragadi. I made great benefit using that short cut bato. yes Birtamod has changed lots, and has become ugly also,, asadhyaa dhulo chaa tyeha. i used to stay in hostel in Kankai boarding,, we used to run away for cenema at night in Shiva, Urbashi cincema (later on there came that annapurna takij also),,,je hoos hostel life chahhii bullet thiyooo,,,left lots of memories in life. ani purba paschim ko rajmarga ramroo banayeko chaa.... ani maobadi samasyaa le gardaa the bank of Budhabare is shut and folks gotta go Birtamod for that.. ke garnee samaya anusar chalnai paryoo. the road from Birtamod to Illam has been made good, and there is a frequent taxi service in that route. just pay 120 rupaya,, then u can raeach illam from BIrtamod in 3 hours. And that dhulabari bazar has shifted from the north to right close to the highway. alu mitra ho ,, aja lai bida chahanchuu, jai desh

himalayas bro (or may be sis),, u won my heart. the map is so awesome and i can see my village (Budhabare) on it. any idea about the date for the map,, just wondering how recent it is. i can see the hadiya khola of my village (blue in color) SImple gal,, yes i know a place with name Burne,, its just 2 miles north of Budhabare and there is a nice chiya bagan,, i can bet that anyone who goes to that chiya bagan and sits for a while under the trees and feels the cool breege, he/she can hardly resist becoming a kabi and writing a kabita (i too did that few times). I remember after hostel stay, when i was back to village,, i used to ride my hero cycle and go to burne. In the base of the burne dado, there used to be a nice dhara where i used todrink water. i feel pity for myself, born and brought up in such a cool place,, i ended up now in this crapy west. tears about to come in my eyes,, shuuk shuuk shuuk shuuk (fakai fullai dine kohi bhaye pani hunthiyyoo). Jhapali mitra,, i am very familiar to arjun dhara.. yes i did my bratabandha in Arjundhara temple (ohh i suld start wearing janai again,,,, i used to be wearing one,, but feel difficult going to swim with janai,, so removed it.. guess its like - think globally and act locally). HImalayas mitra,, about the map,, just wondering the status of maps of Jhapa,, do we have maps made in GIS environment,,it would be great to have jhapa district landscape map in 2.5 D views. would be mad fun to zoom in and navigate to my house also (just pray god that this dream soon come true). don forget pals,, jhapa is well known for dhan also (paddy) and almost every house in north-east belt of Jhapa (viz. Sanischare, Jaipur, Budhabare, Santinagar etc) have supari ko boot (areca nut) that species has great ornamental value also. Ya, i must admit,, very young jhapali kids (even those who move around without kattu), are good in throwing stones at supari ko bot and eating the fruit. WOw, that milky raw supari is very soft, has awesome taste and gives a wonderful trip also (rum rum parnee). SImple gal,, so u from Biratnagar???? ani kata hoo hija aja,, Clark univ tira hoo ki kaso??? Biratnagar is mostly the sasurali place for guys from Budhabare. These two places exchange folks very often. guys keep on updating and lets makie jhapa familiar to all nepalese folks and welcome them to visit out district. Off course jhapalis have a big heart to share wiht all neps. sai desh

Hello Jhapali foks.. really feels good to know so many people from Jhapa and browse through the old memories of Jhapa. If I recall, I may be four or five years old when I first went to Burne. Some British people lived there working for the Nepal Tea Development Corporation. My family used to visit them to greet them for Christmas. I still remember when our car used to pass through the khola splashing the fresh water all around. I can still smell that fresh water. How can one forget the lush green paddy fields of Budhabare. Budhabare rice is really the best rice I have ever eaten. While studying in Delhi for nearly eight years, I had rice transported all the way from Budhabare to Delhi. I still miss that rice. Going north comes the tea estates. Far beyond the limits of earth, one can see nothing but the green tea plants. I happened to sneak in to the Kanyam factory couple of times. It is just amazing. Hangu Lama ji, yeah I have been to the Pathivara Mata Mandir a couple of times. I have no words to describe the trek to the temple. I find myself closest to the nature in the purest form just when I go there. It is said the small stretch of land where the trek starts, used to be a small lake called "Hans Pokhari". It was burried by the British while constructing the road. The myth says there used to live two ducks near the lake and made sure that the lake was always clean. Last December, I was there again. This time we drove all the way the Fikkal Bazaar and then to the Pancha Kanya Mata Mandir. The Fikkal Chilling Center, Fikkal Elainchi, Bananas, everything is just amazing. Few years back also went to Pashupatinagar. I experienced, cold, warm and rain all in one day. Jhapali bro, this time I wanted to go to Arjun Dhara but jutho pareko le garda I couldnt go. But I heard, they have really developed that place. Theres a mela every now and then. Have to heard of the Kichak Vadh Mela. Its far south in Jhapa on the banks River Deunia. There is a small pond, none knows where the water comes from. It is said that it is the same spot where Bhimsen had killed Kishak while they were living in Guptawas. Bhadrapur Jaycees has done a good effort to preserve that area. Recently, I heard that Archaelogical Dept is excavating the old palace. JHAPA is just amazing. I would simply spend years talking about Jhapa. Have a good weekend foks...

Hi Jhapali bandhus, great thread! I am from Bhadrapur and have tons of fond memories of the district, including Mai Mela and Kichakbadh-ko Mela. Another enduring memory is that of Siliguri - my first encounter to a big city - where I also developed taste for machha-ko jhol ra bhat. It was a world of big theaters. Big trains. Big roads. Big stores. For a long time, I felt sad about the strong northward pull of the East-West Highway and my own border town's steady decline. In its hey days in the 70s, when Nepal used to export rice to a newly independent Bangladesh, local rice mills hummed and whistled all night and day. Galgalia buzzed with life--a railway official at the train station in Bihar told me years later that no other stop in the area handled so much freight. Over the years, the Highway has completely transformed what were once little hamlets up north -- Birtamode ( a prime example), Dhulabari, even Damak. Bhadrapur has witnessed a minor renaissance in recent years. Easy air connection to Kathmandu (Bhadrapur should rank alongside Pokhara, Lukla and Biratnagar as the country's busiest aiport outside kathmandu) has made it the gateway to Siliguri/Darjeeling. But the hustle and bustle of the yester years are sadly missing. I hope to be there late July/early August.

Hi Folks, Keep this thread up. I am from Ilam Jilla but went to Sanischare high. This thread brought so many fond memories of my childhood. I could not stop myself to register at Sajha and post. Anyone here went to Sanischare high? Any good/bad memories about Joshi sir? My brother was telling me that Joshi sir was at our place at KTM recently and telling him; "ye, tyo Gadha ta America ma po chha ahile? Tyas lai lat hanchu Vani deenu." I was sweet that he still remembers me. Birtamod was our movie town, I have been to Mai mela several times, Arjun dhara mandir was our "Pani Padhero", Naxal bari for fire works in Tihar, and Yes, I remember the "Magar ko hotel". I could not make upto Jhapa/Ilam when i was in Nepal early this year but plan on visiting there probably next year. I know Kankai boarding principal personally. The other guy someone didn't know who started Dip Joyti school is Bir mani dhakal. Keep sharing memories. Cheers...

Been to Himalaya and Tokla Tea Estates in Jhapa and Ilam chiya kaman in Ilam. All have their own charms. Tea estates in Jhapa though a bit flat have their own beauty intesified by the trees grown within the bagan. The beauty of Ilam chiya bagan may be due to the geographical location in itself with refreshing climatic environment. Also had the opportunity to visit the chiya bagan in Pachthar, owned by Bastola(forgot the name)where they produce organic tea. A bit too steep! My views only!

Vivid, I agree with your points. Most of the people like to go to Kanyam for picnic..or Ilam although there are lot of tea estates in Terai, I think because of beautiful scenery and climate. I have been to Ilam chiya bagan, Kanyam, Tokla, Giri bandhu and Himalaya (which is the nearest from my home). Jaya_nepal bro, Kalu meche ko naam chahi suneko ho. aru Birtamod ko Manoj jo chhora mareko abhiyog ma jail pareko thiyo. aru Mantri, Dhurbe haru ko pani khub kura suneko thiye.

I have some fond memories of Jhapa, stayed there for 2 years.Janta ko chora chori padna kathmandu aune afu chai padena ,bigryo bhanera Jhapa lakhatiyo.Studied at Bidur English Boardin skool,Bhadrapur....lived in Kirat colony.Memories include goin to galgaliya in search of nirvana and comin back high on phencydil(i don't remember the spellin),nitrosun, durbin and all those stuffs that seemed cool that time.Kirat colony had some nasty reputation and keepin that in mind i represented colony to the full extent.Campus mode ma basera campus ko keta haru lai tharkaune, sarswati puja ma babal garna jane, sangam chowk ko keta haru sita jammin garne..and yeah al otta memories includin khalpada. And the best part was dashain tihar ma jhapa bhari manche aunthe and poor me use to catch a night bus to kathmandu...coz ktm was my home.I missed the urban life when i was in jhapa but learned a lot and enjoyed every moment of it.Tara no offence j bhaye pani jhapali haru guff chai atti dine..

I have been to jhapa, tokla tea estate tyahi hoina (forgive me if i am wrong)? Been to birtamod, damak also. Dhulabari pani jhapa ho? right about budhabare and biratnagars relationship. still finding it hard to figure out the geographical demarkation of jhapa, map didn't help me much. anyways, lots of my friends at hattisar dharan were jhapalis'. They are very hardworking and honest beings.

Hi Jhapali, Of course, I know Dhakals from sanischare. Chhatra mani sir taught us english in 9th grade. we had few Dhakals in our class but I forgot their name (Its been a while). I think, Khagendra dhakal was "Pradhan Pancha" in panchayat era. Mahendra and Dependra dhakal dais were very good football player. Do you know Krishna Dharabasi? Folks, lets not use this threads to compare tea estates between Ilam and Jhapa or any other for that matter. Rather, lets use this to share memories.

Jhapali mitras,, actually Sanischare is like a akhada of Dhakals... lots of bhakals there. ya, Dipendra dhakal used to be good in football, we r from same school. what about those rest dhakals,, who used to be my hostel mates in Birtamod (Rajiv, Pankaj and Robin Dhakal). Dipendra works somewhere in Biratnagar,, Rajiv chahi still college ma nai halli dai hola ( i guess so).. they are all folks of this jhapali,,,, One friend from Biratnagar (don mention his name) used to be studying in Kankai as a day scholar from his mama ghar in Sanischare, he was cool.. gues now he is in Houston,, heard from a close source (rajiv dhakal) that he managed to trap the daughter of the gas station owner (from India) where he used to wrk. he later got married her and now became the gas station owner.. lau uskoo pani uddhar nai hoos. this word KB is very heart touching,, and its a typical jhaps word, short cut for Khoya Birke,, if u folks remember,, the jaand and raksi of bhattis are stored in bottle and cans and sealed with a cork made of makai ko khoya,, thats why its called Khoya birke (KB), riceberg was also equally popular. I wonder if u guys have moved around in Birtamod,, my school was close to that Wednesday hattiya (also called hattiya bazar) every wednesday we used to get out of hostel compound taking a change and see the butchers cutting buff. And off course,, do folks remember that Mandakini ko pasal,, that coooool looking gal had eyes like that of Mandakini (biralo ankha) so she was called Mandakini,, regardless of her profession and private affairs,, her beauty if worth appreciating (guess now she grew a bit old and not any more charming). we used to burn that macha ko sidra in her shop and enjoy the awesome taste. My close buddy was good in drinking jaand but i was a bit sojho , never drank alcohol, so used to eat bhaatmass + onion sandeko. any guys from Little flower?? Diwas Adhikari (guess one of the best student of that school) is one of my closest mitra. I remember once our school went to Little flowers to play football,, and prior to half-time,, our school had made 7 for nill. Recently Diwas also admitted to me saying,, haroo school ko taa timroo school lee beijet garo nii,,, lau mitra haroo, keep up with this thread ..
