Royal Family Condolence Program held in Nebraska

Bellevue, Nebraska, June 16, 2001. A condolence program was organized here at Bellevue University in honor of Late Royal Family of Nepal. The program started with a short speech by Anurakta Shrestha, a Nebraska resident Nepalese professional. The condolence program was continued with playing National Anthem Music, observing one minute of silence and paying tribute by offering flowers and garlands to the Royal Family picture. At the end, the participants signed on condolence book which was later sent to the Royal Nepal Embassy in Washington DC.

In that program, Balabhadra Bhandari, a visitor and father of a Nepalese student studying in Nebraska, expressed his deep condolence. He presented a brief obituary of the late King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and said, "The King and the citizens used to walk hand on hand and the King always used to take a step in favor of the citizens by analyzing the situation of the country."

Anurakta Shrestha, the founder member of Nebraska Nepalese Society, hosted the program. He said, "There is a saying that sharing increases happiness and decreases sorrow. In this program, I believe, we will feel a little relieved by sharing the greatest sorrow of our country." In that occasion, the formal establishment of Nebraska Nepalese Society was also announced. The Mission Statement of the Society said, "Founded in June 16, 2001, the Nebraska Nepalese Society is created to strengthen cultural and patriotic ties binding Nepalese living in the Nebraska area and to promote the welfare of Nepal and its citizens, traditions and institutions”. The founder members of this institution are Anirudra Shresta, Anurakta Shrestha, Kamal Bhushal, Gyanendra Bhandari, Sanjeev Ballav Pant and Kobid Dahal. Altogether about 100 Nepalese attended the program.
