Here is a trick. Whenever you make a wire transfer to Nepal, send the amount in USD. Do not let US Banks convert that to NRS for you because as you just experienced, they take a big cut on fx rate conversion. Send it as USD and once the money gets transferred to Nepal into NRS account, the bank there will do the conversion from USD for you and in my experience their rate is much better than even these companies like Moneygram, Western Union and others. They seem to give you the rates set by Nepal Rastrya Bank the day they received the transfer and do not charge any other fee like banks over here do even when receiving international wire.

One thing to note, afaik, you can send up to 100k with the $45 or whatever BOA charges but a big international transfer (after 10k I think) goes through federal verification, so be sure you are prepared for that. As long as its legally made money, you've paid taxes on it and not sending to suspicious destination, you should be fine. I've transferred up to 30k and it normally takes around 5 days but the exchange rate is really good.
