@Ambrosia: In modern societies, an individual's family membership descends through the male line. But archaeological and anthropological evidence suggests that in the past, many more societies were matrilineal where kinship was based on the mother or the female line. 

In the sub-Saharan African hunter-gatherers society, the husband left his clan and went to live with the clan and family of his wife, laboring for her or with her in the service of her parents. 

Most theorists suggest that father's lineage was instituted by men(drop-dead handsome and articulate if you will) overthrowing matrilineal culture. On a positive note, the feminist movement has brought symbolic reforms on issues ranging from reproductive to property rights.
