It has happened to myself. I'd not blame the parents, rather I'd say it was a bad luck. The ape was not trying to protect the baby towards the end. It was actually trying to enjoy the play. Although the world has said the gorilla was protecting the kid, I'd disagree.
The action of the gorilla reminded me of monkeys' behavior. I grew up in Pashupati area I used to watch them closely. Monkeys are very intelligent, if they like, they hug each other. They very carefully take care of their kids. As they transport their kids, they can jump from roof to roof, tree to tree and still make sure the babies are not hurt a little bit. They never drag their live kids... NEVER.
I've seen cases where dogs and monkeys are kept as pets. The monkeys, being more intelligent, teased the dogs all the time. To the point they hated each other, although they lived together. The monkeys always dragged the dogs' puppies.

In the particular video, the ape tried to hide the kid initially, then dragged the kid to the middle. Then after a few seconds, it made the kid stand up and looked at its back. You may think I have a dirty mind, but for sure the monkey was checking out the kid's sex organ ... 100%. Finding no ape-like structure, the ape gave up the idea of sex and because it was excited, it dragged him again.
Now, the ape is killed, but I think it was a bad luck. If the monkey had not been killed, the end result would have been an injured kid, at best. And for this reason, i say the zoo keepers knew what they were doing.
Don't believe me? I'm a living proof. I still have two scars from a monkey bite when I was bitten by a frightened monkey when I was just about 4. The monkey in my case was being chased by a soldier in Gaucharan area (Shlesmantak ban near Pashupati) and because the monkey was frightened, and I was going to the airport to watch the plane in a group of about 10, the monkey came towards my cousin sister, she was bigger than me she managed to get out of the way. But me, being too young, could not defend myself. The monkey bit me and blood was all over me. The soldier took me home from there.

Now if someone bluntly asks me is it OK to kill animals? No, and that too I'm saying ... I've been bitten by a monkey, two dogs and two snakes. Still I love all kinds of animals.
