Once we went to see a financial adviser : after hours of exchanging ideas and data , we were advised to get life insurance , sounded a good plan for securing future. Later we knew that there is a good commission for recommending a broker . We did not buy it. As you mentioned it , people working in financial sector would not understand life insurance policy.
The other weekend I heard on redio that the insurance company he was with is sold , it is not giving any income to new company , are asking to discontinue it and buy new , even though it was and a legit business. Caller has been paying premium for last 15-16 years ,

Who can afford to buy a 500 dollars per month premium is it not too high ? You must have 80k + yearly income. No job is secured, at my work people are getting laid off left and right. Who knows?

It remind me my college friend jha's joke, you can replace the skin and make different thing but the habit and nature remains the same, as changing demography coming to USA does not change who they are.
