Clinton's shrewdness and willingness to make it through very tough times at the cost of aspirations of her party base comes in part that she (and Bill) had to survive the brutal onslaught of then US House Speaker Newt Gingrich and other "tough guy" House Republicans like Dick Armey, Tom Delay etc who controlled US House for the most of Bill's presidency.
This unfortunately became Clinton's habitual pattern in post-Bill's presidency. If someone wants trace the origins of the current acrimony and utter chaos in GOP, you might wanna peek into the GOP House caucus during the speakership of Newt Gingrich.
