I too don't know much about stock markets, however, I believe you don't have to be an expert to invest money in the market unless you buy and sell stocks regularly. In my opinion, you can invest in some index funds, such as Vanguard Wellington Fund which is a mix of 65% Stock and 35% bonds. Even during the recession of 2008, it didn't lose much value.
