The open border policy should be closed and regulated.
When you have a porous border between two countries, the people who are worse off in their own country will try to go to the other country for their livelihood. This means Indians who are worse off in India come to Nepal and vice versa. But the issue at hand is the economies of scale.
Even with simple mathematics Nepal is at a big disadvantage. Let's say 1% of Nepalis go to India and 1% of Indians go to Nepal.
1% of Indian population is 26 million while 1% of Nepali population is 291 thousand.
Leaving border open means allowing Indians to seep into Nepali population by sheer osmosis. Once the population of India starts booming in Nepal, they will start asking for rights and their demands will tilt more towards India since they have ties in India. In due time there will be more Indian-tilted people in Nepal and Nepal will be helpless to save it's own sovereignty.
The events thesedays in Madhesh is a proof of this actually happening. If borders are not closed and regulated, then in next 10 years there will be greater issues and worse ramifications for the general Nepali population.
