I am replying just to share my experience and please bear in mind I am not trying to prove any point. In my previous project, BAs are using sql queries to understand the structure of data, based on those data they will let business people know whats already there and what's the relationship between those data. And then only business people will come with their requirement based on that analysis. It a was a migration project.

In one project, one of a colleague of mine who is a BA, asked me to help him analyze a chunk of java code. Why? Business was making something new in different platform and they want to replicate same functionality with other new features. Based on that he was asked to create a requirement.

Not saying that every BA will need this. Just sharing my personal experience. That's all.
