Did you forget Bir Balbharda Kuwar went to India (Lahore) to serve a king after he retired from Nepali army ? So monetary incentive is an important factor as Nalapani pointed, but it may not be the only thing. And, it it Kumai bahuns (and khatris who have kumai bahun surname) who served in gorkhali army, and worked as royal priest /raj purohit/ raj guru. But, shah kings from Kaski and Lamjung also had Purbiya bahun as royal priests.

And Nalapani bro, i am not talking about you, but some people still talk too much about who is pure chhetri (Kshetriya) and who is Khatri, and who is who. I don't think that is very important now.
