Xoom bro,
Java is a great field to go for right now. You will not regret it, once you become pro. However to get hang of it is quiet challenging. Not trying to scare you but it takes a good amount of effort for first couple of years to grasp the fundamentals. Java itself is huge and also you have to consider other technologies that you interface with like html, css, jquery in the front end and various database in back end. One of the senior Java developer in the company I work at said, 'after 15 years working as java developer, i'm finally understanding the core concepts". Meaning, there are new thing you can learn everyday, unlike some other jobs where you learn for few month and repeat the same for rest of your life.
To answer you question, you don't have to be pro to start off but you should know the core concept of programming. Its like solving math problems, the more you practice the more you learn. Also it depends on the company and manager. If its a small company with you as primary developer, you will be screwed. When I started off, I spent like 4-5 hours extra everyday at home to finish the task, even more in weekends. The point is, you should try to learn as much as you can for first couple years.
About the salary, you are eventually gonna make alot more after you have some years of experience. Starting range will be around 65-80k. People with 10 years experience makes around 200k easy.
Good luck !
