KATHMANDU, May 22: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday said that Aamako Ghar, a shelter home operated by Dil Shova Shrestha, had been keeping children illegally.

Making its report public, the NHRC said that its investigation has found that the institution had the permission to run old-age home but not shelter for children.

Likewise, the report has stated that some children at Aamako Ghar were forced to work in the homes of rich people as domestics, which is illegal.

The NHRC has recommended District Administration Office, Kathmandu to launch further investigation into the issues and take necessary legal action against the culprits involved in perpetuating child labor.

Likewise, the NHRC report reveals that Aamako Ghar had kept the children with an intention of converting them into Christianity. "The task of providing books of only Christian theology and making them attend only Christian prayers reflects the intention of religious conversion," stated the report.

Though Aamako Ghar operator Shrestha claimed that the children were brought to the shelter from roads, the commission has found that most of the children were not orphans and they were brought from Karnali zone.

The NHRC has also highlighted the poor sanitation facilities at Aamako Ghar for both elderly women and children.

The commission has also seriously raised the issue of the misuse of donation at Aamako Ghar and suggested forming of a separate probe committee to investigate into the financial irregularities.

Earlier, a team deployed by the Kathmandu District Administration Office (DAO) and Central Child Welfare Board (CCWB) on February 26 had rescued 37 children from Aamako Ghar.

However, the NHRC has dismissed the charge against Shrestha of abetting sexual exploitation, and asked the media not to publish unconfirmed reports that could harm the dignity of any individual.
